Because of a snow storm, a passenger and his Uber driver were stuck on I-95 for hours.

A fat calculation from the US company followed.

Richmond (USA) - Anyone driving their car in Germany was stuck in traffic jams for around 40 hours on average last year - a study by Inrix recently revealed.

Drivers in the USA have it a little better, they spend an average of only 36 hours in traffic jams.

That is ten hours more than in 2020, but still 63 hours less than before the corona pandemic.

For some motorists in the US state of Virginia, this value is likely to be significantly higher this year.

Together with his Uber driver, Peters spent 14 hours in the gigantic traffic jam on Interstate 95. The trip cost the American 200 US dollars (around 176 euros).

As a token of courtesy, Peters gave the driver a tip of 100 dollars (approx. 88 euros).

But the trip was to be even more expensive, because Uber charged Peters a surcharge of 400 US dollars (about 352 euros).

Together with the tip, the bill ended up being just over $ 700.

On its website, Uber emphasizes that "heavy traffic makes the trip longer than expected, so your fare may change to compensate the driver for the extra time."

For Peters, however, the award is incomprehensible, as he could not have guessed that he would be stuck in a traffic jam for so long.

In addition, it had no influence on the route taken by the Uber driver.

The company seems to have recognized this too and reimbursed Peters the amount after he challenged the fee.

"We realized that the long highway closure was an exceptional circumstance for him and the driver," a spokesman told NBC.
