An almost 20-year-old SUV was auctioned off in the USA - the price achieved would have been unthinkable until recently.

Elk Grove (USA) - The chip crisis is making it difficult for car manufacturers - significantly fewer vehicles roll off the production line than could actually be produced.

In some cases, manufacturers have to dig into their bag of tricks - and for example forego certain equipment - in order to keep production running at all.

As a result, the prices for used cars have also risen sharply.

An example from the USA shows that people are now spending seemingly absurd sums of money on a car - in this case on a relatively unspectacular SUV from the Ford brand, as reported by 24auto.de.

This 2003 Ford Excursion went under the hammer in the US at an extreme price.

Used car hammer: SUV from 2003 achieves insane price at auction

You know them, the typical classic automobiles, whose value is actually increasing all the time. This includes many Porsche models, such as this 911 Turbo S (993) from 1998 with a "somewhat extravagant" interior. Automobile legends, like this Ferrari F40 that burned down in Japan, are hardly less than one million euros. But now a relatively “average” Ford SUV has achieved an exorbitant price at auction.

The 2003 Ford Excursion came under the virtual hammer on the “Bring a Trailer” platform - and ultimately sold for a whopping 100,000 US dollars (around 88,000 euros).

Sure: At just under 20 years of age, the vehicle has a very low mileage of 16,000 miles (around 25,750 kilometers), it is the all-wheel drive version and a "limited" model.

And judging by the pictures, the condition also seems to be very good.

The cheap plastic landscape in the Ford Excursion is reminiscent of many US models from the 1990s.

Used Car Hammer: $ 100,000 for a Ford Excursion

But $ 100,000 for a used SUV? That seems like a lot. After all, the interior of the Ford exudes the typical cheap plastic charm of American cars from the 1990s. And the fact that the SUV was equipped with numerous extras such as leather seats, automatic air conditioning and a six-disc CD changer at the time of purchase should not change that much. For comparison: A new Cadillac Escalade, a Lincoln Navigator or, for example, a BMW X7 is also available in the USA from around 75,000 US dollars. Because of the latter model, the Munich-based car manufacturer is currently facing a class action lawsuit for allegedly defective drink holders.

The Ford Excursion was only built over a period of six years before it was discontinued in 2006 due to lack of demand.

Why the buyer was willing to spend so much money on it - one can only speculate.

Perhaps he needs the space that the 5.76 meter long vehicle offers and is even equipped with three rows of seats.

Or else, he fears the electric age - and considers a 7.3-liter V8 turbodiesel to be a future-proof drive.
