Most households in Germany have at least one car.

Most German households have exactly one car.

In some, however, there are significantly more cars, as the statistics show.

Around 5 percent of households in

Saarland

and

Bavaria*

own three cars or more.

This puts the two federal states at the top in Germany, according to statistics from the Bundestag's scientific service.

Fewer cars per household in Berlin, Hamburg and Bremen

Berlin

has the lowest proportion of households with at least three cars

at less than 0.5 percent.

Hamburg

and

Bremen

come to just under 1 percent.

The national average is 4 percent.

The majority of German households (53 percent) have a car

, 21 percent have two cars. 22 percent of households have no car at all.

At 53 percent, the proportion of carless people is particularly high in households with a low economic status.

In households with very high status, the figure is 8 percent.
