More than 70,000 people demonstrate against corona measures

5:36 a.m .:

On Monday evening, tens of thousands of people across Germany again demonstrated against corona measures and a possible compulsory vaccination. According to an estimate based on police information, this time there were more than 70,000 people. The protests were accompanied by large police presences and in some places by counter-demonstrations. Meetings were broken up several times, for example in Rostock and Cottbus, because the police could not find a leader or because the mask requirement was violated and no mouth and nose protection was worn.

According to the police, 21,000 demonstrators against the corona policy were counted on Monday evening in Thuringia alone, around 14,000 in Bavaria, 11,000 in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, around 7,000 in Saxony-Anhalt, Brandenburg and Baden-Württemberg, around 4,000 in North Rhine-Westphalia and in Saxony and Berlin each about 3000.

Seven-day incidence rises to 553.2

4:23 a.m .:

It is the next high: According to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), the seven-day incidence in Germany has risen to 553.2.

The day before the value was 528.2, a week ago it was 387.9.

It is now the fifth day in a row with a new high.

The seven-day incidence quantifies the number of new infections per 100,000 inhabitants over a period of seven days.

The health authorities also reported 74,405 new infections within 24 hours to the RKI on Monday.

A week ago there were 45,690 new infections.

As the RKI further announced, 193 new deaths in connection with the corona virus were counted.

The total number of registered corona deaths in Germany thus increases to 115,842.

Guterres: The only way to end the pandemic is through fair vaccine distribution

3.45 a.m .:

UN Secretary-General António Guterres has again called for a fair distribution of the corona vaccines.

Only a vaccination of all people worldwide will end the pandemic, Guterres said in a video speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos on Monday.

"The past two years have taught us a simple but brutal truth: when we leave someone behind, we leave everyone behind," Guterres said.

"If we don't succeed in vaccinating everyone, new variants will emerge that will spread across borders and bring daily life and the economy to a standstill," warned the UN Secretary-General.

The international community must therefore act fairly and justly in the fight against the pandemic.

Guterres referred to the World Health Organization's (WHO) goal of vaccinating 40 percent of the world's population by the end of 2021 and 70 percent by mid-2022.

"We're nowhere near those goals," Guterres said.

The vaccination rates in rich countries are seven times higher than in African countries, which is "shameful".

Number of English problem

drinkers

increased during pandemic

1:32 a.m .:

In England, the number of people with problematic alcohol consumption in the corona pandemic has increased.

18 percent of adults consumed alcohol in harmful amounts in the three months to October 2021, according to a YouGov survey, the UK government's Office for Health Improvement and Inequalities said on Monday.

This means that around a quarter of adult men and ten percent of women in England have a problem drinking.

According to the survey, with around 1,700 participants, before the start of the pandemic, only around twelve percent of adults drank alcohol in amounts that were associated with an increasing or higher risk.

Addiction expert Julia Sinclair from the Royal College of Psychiatrists attributed the development in part to the corona lockdown.

With limited options, drinking at home has become a "habit," she said.

There, however, drinking can take many hours longer than in a pub.

She thinks it is unlikely that people will return to their drinking habits before the pandemic.
