The authorities are now trying to find out how the 26-year-old murderer was able to escape from his psychiatric hospital.

Jérémy Rimbaud, the "cannibal" of the Pyrenees who murdered a nonagenarian in November 2013 in Nouilhan (Hautes-Pyrénées), escaped Wednesday from the psychiatric hospital in Toulouse in which he was interned, before attacking a septuagenarian.

He was arrested by law enforcement a few hours later.

Update on the investigation.

What happened ?

According to the testimony of Françoise, 72, the victim interviewed by RTL, the attack occurred around 10 p.m. Wednesday in the streets of Toulouse.

“I was going out to walk my dog, I heard someone running.

I turned around and it was this guy coming with a huge stick up.

And then he started beating me.

I screamed, I protected my head, because he was hitting his head with his arms.

It was local residents who put the aggressor to flight: “Neighbours came out, one of them came down with his gun and took aim at him.

So he stopped, the police arrived, we took him away.

Everyone thinks I was lucky, because he was there to kill me, I'm sure.

I don't understand how these guys can escape from where they are, there's a problem somewhere.

Another neighbor tells France Bleu that she heard screams: “I heard several times

Who is Jérémy Rimbaud, the "cannibal of Toulouse"?

In 2013, this 26-year-old former soldier killed a 90-year-old retiree by smashing his skull with a metal tool before attempting to burn him.

The man had also claimed to have removed and eaten the heart and the tongue of his victim, to whose home he had entered under cover of the night.

He had mentioned "external forces", saying "having received orders by voices".

Experts had unanimously considered that Jérémy Rimbaud “was suffering from a psychiatric disorder that abolished his discernment”.

He had then been declared irresponsible for his actions at the time of the events and had not been tried.

How did the patient manage to escape?

This is the question that the authorities are asking because the circumstances of his escape remain unclear.

"He gives way to his hosts", indicates the Toulouse prosecutor's office to France Bleu, which specifies "that his hospitalization regime does not mean double-locking, it is not a prison regime".

An investigation was opened for "intentional violence with a weapon".

The investigations will continue to determine “the conditions in which he left” and a psychiatric expertise has been requested to find out if it is possible to question Jérémy Rimbaud on this new attack.

In the meantime, according to BFM, the prefect of Haute-Garonne has ordered that he be placed in a closed sector.
