Influential filmmaker Ivan Reitman, who has been behind a variety of beloved comedies since the late 1970s to the present, has died at the age of 75. Reitman was born in 1946 in Czechoslovakia to Holocaust survivor Jewish parents who immigrated with him to Canada when he was 4. He left behind his wife Genevieve and his three children, among them his son the filmmaker Jason Reitman.
Reitman died peacefully in his sleep Saturday night at his home in Montecito, California, his family told the AP.
"Our family mourns the unexpected loss of a husband, father and grandfather, who taught us to always seek the magic in life," his children Jason, Katherine and Caroline Reitman said in a joint statement.
"We take solace in the fact that his work as a filmmaker has brought laughter and happiness to countless others around the world. While we mourn in privacy, we hope that those who knew him through his films will always remember him."
