How much fuel can you take with you in petrol cans?

The amount of fuel that you can carry in your car is limited.

Fuel is getting more and more expensive.
One could therefore store fuel in reserve canisters.
But how much is allowed?
According to a report by ADAC.de
, in Germany, unlike in some other countries, you can
carry fuel canisters in private vehicles.
However, the amount is limited.

How many liters of fuel can you store in petrol cans in a car?
How many liters of fuel you are allowed to carry in the petrol can in the car is clearly regulated in Germany.
You may carry a maximum of 60 liters of fuel per reserve
can in your vehicle
.
However, the ADAC recommends taking a maximum of 10 liters of fuel with you in the car.
This will definitely get you to the nearest petrol station and will not expose you or your passengers to any unnecessarily high risk.
Also, be sure to store the gas can as far away from the people in the car as possible.
The
spare canister is best stowed away securely in the trunk.

What do you have to watch out for when storing fuel in the petrol can in the car?
In addition, the petrol canisters must be marked.
According to the ADAC, the reserve canisters must have either
UN approval
or
reserve fuel canister approval
(RKK).
You can find out whether your petrol canister meets this requirement from the corresponding embossing on your reserve canisters.

Observe the regulations abroad on taking petrol in petrol cans with you in the car
While the total amount of fuel that you can carry in your car is quite high in Germany,
things are a little different
abroad .
In some popular travel countries, such as Greece, Croatia or Bulgaria, you are not allowed to take
any additional petrol with
you .
If you do not comply with the respective regulations, you have to reckon with severe fines.
The following table provides you with a brief overview of which regulations apply to which country for carrying fuel in reserve canisters:

Also note that, according to the report, the rules for jerry can fuel on
ferries
may differ.
Check with the relevant ferry company if you wish to travel with your car on a car ferry.
For safety reasons, for example, there is a complete
ban
on transporting extra fuel
on all ships bound for
Great Britain, Iceland, Ireland and Cyprus .
In
Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Finland
, taking fuel in petrol cans may also be prohibited.

In these cases, it is not worth driving abroad to fill up and filling petrol cans
If you travel from the EU to a non-EU country or back with fuel in reserve canisters, you must
declare
the transported fuel according to the ADAC .
Even if fuel no longer has to be declared within the EU: For example, if you drive to Austria to fill up and want to take more fuel with you in spare canisters, you will have to pay
mineral oil tax
for quantities of more than 20 liters, according to the report .
