Since 2012, the year in which it was launched, Mazda CX-5 has quickly earned the role of best-seller of the Hiroshima house, also thanks to continuous updates spread over two generations and as many restylings.

The last of which was aimed primarily at increasing connectivity and refining mechanics.

In 2019, however, the line-up of engines was refreshed, confirmed in 2022: four units are available: two petrol units, SkyActiv-G 2.0-liter 165hp and 2.5-liter 194hp, both equipped with cylinder deactivation technology.

The 2.2-liter turbodiesel SkyActiv-D engine is available in two power steps: 150 and 184 hp.

This latter engine, in combination with the automatic transmission and AWD all-wheel drive, was equipped on the Mazda CX-5 protagonist of the Ansa Motori test.

Aesthetically, the model year 2022 of the Japanese medium-large size SUV does not present substantial changes compared to the last restyling and does not change in the measurements: 455 cm in length, 184 in width, 168 cm height and a 270-foot wheelbase. generous luggage compartment, which ranges from a minimum of 506 liters of capacity up to a maximum of 1,620 liters.

The Soul Red Cristal livery enhances the soft lines of the body molded according to the principles of Kodo Design, the stylistic signature that unites all Mazda models.

The result is a car that appears more compact than it actually is, with the visual effect replicated even inside the airy passenger compartment, covered entirely with premium eco-friendly materials.

The elegant and minimalist setting of the environment remains unchanged, net of the new 10.25-inch display dedicated to the Human Machine Interface infotainment system, already seen on the Mazda3 and CX-30.

In addition to compatibility with Apple Car Play and Android Auto, it includes OTA updates, emergency calls and some functions that can be managed remotely via the MyMazda App. Much of the management is entrusted to the selector located in the central tunnel, a choice adopted to limit the distractions of the driver, sacrificing a minimum of practicality.

On a mechanical level, the most recent interventions have improved the efficiency of the petrol and diesel engines by reducing friction.

The Japanese technicians also intervened to refine the four-wheel drive system and to improve the response to the accelerator.

Very ready, in the case of the SkyActiv-D 2.2 turbodiesel engine with 184 HP and 445 Nm of maximum torque equipped on the CX-5 of the test-drive.

The quick sprint and good acceleration allow the Hiroshima SUV to easily disengage in urban traffic, despite its considerable dimensions and its nature as a thoroughbred road racer.

CX-5 offers the best in long distances, thanks to a set-up capable of rewarding comfort and driving pleasure.

Above all thanks to a steering that appears precise between curves, where the four-wheel drive system intervenes by sending all the torque to the wheels with more grip.

The understeer, triggered by the roll that emerges only when you want to force your hand, is instead limited by the G-Vectoring Control Plus system, which brakes the outer wheels.

It is part of a rather rich ADAS equipment that also includes adaptive cruise control with stop & go function, automatic braking with obstacle recognition, the active lane keeping system and blind spot monitoring even in reverse.

The consumptions recorded were 5.7 liters / 100 km, close to the 5.2 l / 100 km declared by the house.

Mazda CX-5 2022 is available in two traditional trim levels, Business and Exceed, flanked by three special versions: Newground, Homura and Signature, each characterized by specific external and internal finishes.

Prices start at € 34,200 for the 165 hp petrol version with manual gearbox and front-wheel drive.

The price of the trial version, the Mazda CX-5 SkyActiv-D 184 Hp Awd in Signature version, starts at 48,700 euros.
