After a long struggle, the federal government had agreed on a reduction in fuel prices.

But the Greens want to overturn a measure again.

Update from April 4, 10:30 a.m.:

Many motorists nationwide had been waiting for this message: The traffic light coalition wants to reduce fuel prices and therefore announced tax cuts for petrol and diesel.

But exactly this approach is now being questioned by the economic policy spokesman for the Greens.

“We are currently seeing prices at the filling stations of less than two euros per liter.

Why should we subsidize petrol and diesel at this level," Dieter Janecek explained to the "Augsburger Allgemeine".

In addition, it is to be expected that fuel prices will continue to fall due to the release of US oil reserves and corona lockdowns in China.

From Janecek's point of view, it is therefore a mistake to continue to make petrol and diesel cheaper, as this would negate the "guidance effect" of the tax cuts.

"We should better use the money for the tank discount to support households more with the gas bill," emphasizes the Green politician.

So far, the federal government's plans have envisaged reducing energy taxes by 30 cents per liter on petrol and 14 cents per liter on diesel for three months "to the European minimum".

However, it is still unclear when the tax cuts will take effect.

This also applies to the other planned reliefs.

The 9-euro ticket for bus and train should come in June at the earliest.

First report from March 24, 11:52 a.m.:

Berlin – The war in Ukraine has repeatedly set new records at the pumps in Germany.

In order to relieve the citizens, Finance Minister Christian Lindner (43, FDP) promised a tank discount.

So the prices should fall below two euros again.

However, it became clear relatively quickly: The tank discount is not without controversy in the coalition and the FDP politician recently rowed back.

Nevertheless, drivers should be relieved, as the federal government announced on Thursday morning (March 24) in Berlin.

High fuel prices: Federal government agrees on relief

In a marathon meeting, the SPD, FDP and Greens have now agreed to lower fuel prices, as reported by 24auto.de.

Gasoline should therefore cost 30 cents less per liter, and the price of diesel will drop by 14 cents per liter.

This measure is initially limited to three months.

It is about reducing energy taxes on fuels "to the European minimum", emphasized Lindner.

The finance minister emphasized that the government must protect the economy and society from the consequences of the war.

In addition, every working citizen in Germany is to receive a one-time energy allowance of 300 euros because of the rising prices.

A relief on income tax is planned, according to a paper published in Berlin on Thursday.

This is to be paid out as a supplement to the salary via the pay slip.

High fuel prices: Federal government invests 14 to 16 billion euros

In addition to relief at the petrol pump, the use of public transport should also become significantly more attractive and cheaper.

Under the motto "9 for 90", citizens should be able to buy a ticket for just nine euros a month in the next 90 days.

The countries should be given the appropriate funds for this.

Welfare recipients and families are also to be further relieved.

Lindner also emphasized that the second energy relief package will have a similar volume to the first, which the federal government had agreed on four weeks ago.

Most recently, he had estimated this at 14 to 16 billion euros.

The Minister of Finance did not want to give exact figures because the costs also depend on fuel consumption.
