If you want to fill up, you have to dig deep into your pocket.

Apps for smartphones help to save money at the petrol station.

Munich – When the first lockdowns came at the beginning of the Corona crisis, fuel prices in Germany fell dramatically.

At times there was a liter of Super E10 for 1.17 euros, while diesel only cost 1.05 euros.

In the meantime, however, the world looks different, if you want to fill up your car, you have to dig deep into your pocket.

In particular, after Russia's attack on Ukraine, prices had exploded.

With prices averaging around €1,954 for Super E10 - which can be an alternative to the expensive Super E5 - and €2,019 for diesel, it's worth comparing prices.

Three smartphone apps in particular can help, as the “Stuttgarter Nachrichten” reports.

In case of doubt, you can save money at the pump.

With price comparison apps like Clever-Tanken you can save money at the gas station.

High fuel prices: Four apps help you save

The best known is probably "Clever-Tanken".

The app has been very popular with many drivers for several years.

One reason for this: the application is easy to use.

It only has to be downloaded from the Play or App Store and opened.

A registration is not required.

"Clever-Tanken" then provides an overview of the cheapest gas stations in the radius previously selected by the user.

There is also a map showing nearby petrol stations.

Artificial intelligence also uses past price developments to calculate whether it is worth filling up or whether it will be cheaper later.

Users of "Clever-Tanken" can be informed by push message when a certain desired price is reached at a gas station.

Gas stations can also be favored.

The app is free for both iOS and Android.

Ads can be removed for €1.99 per year.

High fuel prices: "Benzinpreis-Blitz" compares Europe-wide

A little less known, but just as simple, is the “Gasoline Price Flash” app.

As with "Clever-Tanken" it is enough to install the application and release the location.

Alternatively, users can also enter their postal code and the fuel prices will then be displayed.

A display on a map and price information are also possible.

"Benzinpreis-Blitz" also offers users the opportunity to view the daily course of fuel prices and to trace them back up to four weeks.

In addition to more than 60,000 petrol stations in Germany, the app also offers an overview of prices in other European countries such as France, Austria, Italy and Spain.

The app is available free of charge for Android and iOS.

The version without advertising costs 1.49 euros per year or 6.99 once.

High fuel prices: price comparisons are also possible on Google Maps – with some caveats

If you don't want advertising without spending money on it, you can use the ADAC fuel price app.

In comparison to "Clever-Tanken" and "Gasoline Price Flash", the application offers significantly fewer functions.

In addition to an overview of the gas stations - both on the map and as a list - these can only be favored.

The app does not provide information about price trends, but users can navigate directly to the gas station.

Another app that helps save is Google Maps.

A click on the petrol pump icon is enough here and the user gets an overview of the petrol stations in their vicinity.

However, the prices on Google Maps often differ from the other apps.

One advantage, however, is that you can start navigating to the gas station with just one click.

Google Maps also offers filter options for opening hours and distance.

As with the ADAC, users have to do without statistics such as price developments or forecasts.

The service is ad-free and pre-installed on Android devices.

However, Apple users must download the app free of charge from the App Store.

However, the price comparison is not only worthwhile when fuel prices are high, as they are at the moment.

Even if prices drop again from June due to the lower energy tax, it is still worth using the apps.

And even with the right timing you can save money when refuelling, according to the ADAC, fuel is usually cheaper in the evening than in the morning.
