Volkswagen boss Herbert Diess wants to oust Tesla as the electric car market leader by 2025.

He sees the brand diversity of the group as an ace up his sleeve.

Wolfsburg – A few years ago, Volkswagen was still in the middle of the diesel scandal, but the car company's image has now changed.

The combustion engine is only a phased-out model and should no longer play a role in Wolfsburg from 2035.

CEO Herbert Diess (63) is fully committed to electric cars and wants to become the world market leader there in the coming years.

This position is currently still held by Tesla, Elon Musk's company still has a lead over Volkswagen thanks to an early start and aggressive expansion.

Diess wants to catch up by 2025 and take on the leading role in electromobility.

The VW boss is aware that this will not be an easy task.

Herbert Diess: VW wants to replace Tesla as the electric car market leader

"It's going to be a close race, but we won't give up," Diess emphasized at a Financial Times conference. "I have to say that we didn't expect our main competitor from the USA to be so quick and well prepared. The VW boss had repeatedly praised Musk.

The Tesla boss even took part in a VW meeting via video link.

But Diess is also aware of the danger and warned that Tesla could be left behind when it comes to future mobility.

Accordingly, he also sees the US manufacturer more as a competitor in the future than Mercedes, for example.

Especially since Tesla has also expanded its production with plants in Grünheide near Berlin and Austin.

Nevertheless, Diess sees the chance that Volkswagen can displace Tesla as the world's number 1 by the middle of the decade.

The reason for this is the larger product range of the group, which ranges from volume brands to manufacturers of premium and luxury cars.

"We're not giving up," says the VW boss.

Volkswagen wants to increase its share here to ten percent and has therefore announced that it will bring back the International Harvester Scout as an electric brand.

In addition, another plant and local battery production are necessary to achieve the goal.

Herbert Diess: Ukraine war does not harm VW's electric car plans

Meanwhile, Diess does not see the war in Ukraine as a threat to VW plans to increase the share of electric cars in global sales to 50 percent by the end of the decade, even if this has already resulted in production losses.

The trend towards more environmentally friendly vehicles remains.

However, the high inflation is causing concern for the VW boss.

In addition, the 63-year-old warns again against the formation of blocs in the world in view of the Russian attack on Ukraine.

This would primarily be at the expense of Europe.

That's why Volkswagen is trying to absorb the stresses as best as possible.
