The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) reported 92,344 new corona infections within 24 hours.

That is 7,689 more than on Wednesday a week ago, when 84,655 cases were registered.

The nationwide seven-day incidence rises to 472.4 from 447.3 the previous day and 238.1 in the previous week.

According to the RKI, 112 other people who died in connection with the virus were also reported.

This brings the total number of reported deaths to 140,026.

Experts have been assuming for some time that there will be a large number of cases not recorded by the RKI - mainly because by far not all infected people have a PCR test done.

Only positive PCR tests count in the statistics.

In addition, late registrations or transmission problems can lead to a distortion of individual daily values.

In view of the increasing number of corona infections, Federal Health Minister Karl Lauterbach (SPD) advised older people and people with previous illnesses to get a booster vaccination.

»Unfortunately, the announced summer wave has become reality.

That means little relaxation for the next few weeks," said Lauterbach of the "Rheinische Post".

The previously observed summer effect in the pandemic fizzled out this time.

The reason for this is, among other things, that the currently circulating virus variant is very easily transferable.

In addition, almost all precautionary measures have expired, Lauterbach told the newspaper.

"I therefore urgently recommend that older people and those who have previously been ill get their vaccinations again." This does not necessarily prevent an infection, but it does prevent serious illnesses.
