For years the 400 series has been absent from Peugeot's offer (officially absent, there is an asterisk to this story of the name and it appears at the end of the article), the series that marked the manufacturer's family cars goes back to the mid 30s when the 401 appeared and from there along Decades when you talked about a family, or a large family in Peugeot, you said series 400. The least remembered at least in Israel were the 404, the 405 and within the 90s also the 406.

Today the 508 serves as a flagship for Peugeot while the 3008, its successful and successful crossover is responsible for the more box office success.

Peugeot made a simple calculation and decided that it would be possible to pack the dynamics of the 508 together with the latest and most sought-after look of crossovers in a coupe configuration and with this opportunity to bring back the 400 series - this time to a 21st century family.

And that's basically what's behind the model you see here - the Peugeot 408.

Road test: Peugeot 3008PHEV with 300 hp

Despite the innovative design that looks and takes Peugeot's design language one step further, and even more extreme than its sister from the Citroen C5 X, the 408's platform is the EMP2 we know from the other manufacturer and group models.

It also means that it is a car that uses the basic design of a petrol car that will be presented with an electric version in the future, but not yet in the worlds of the dedicated platform.

Like the track that Volkswagen has already approached with the ID5, the Skoda Aniac, or the one that Hyundai has chosen to go with the Ionic 5 and with the Kia EV6.

What's in there in the meantime under the hood?

The paddle units familiar to us from the group.

1.2-liter gasoline engine, three-cylinder turbocharged with 130 hp at the base. Above it are plug-in versions that use a 1.6-liter engine and electric boost. Here the power levels are 180 or 225 hp when a 12.4 kWh battery is supposed to carry it along 60 k First without engine operation.

There is currently no publication of performance data.

All versions also use the 8-speed planetary gearbox.

Just to place it in terms of dimensions, with a length of 469 cm, a width of 185 cm, a height of 148 cm and a wheelbase of 279 cm it is in the size between 3008 and 508.

That is, larger than the first and quite close in its numbers to the large familial.

The trunk is very large, with 536 liters in the petrol version and 471 in the plug-in version.

In the cabin the latest look of the i-Cockpit driver environment.

Behind the two-spoke steering wheel there is a digital dashboard, with the high trim levels even with a 3D display.

The multimedia screen is tilted towards the driver with a "piano" switches at its bottom and a center console with a "switch" gear selector.

Auto and Apple Android coupling, wireless charging, connection of two devices in parallel to the system, updates via the Internet, electric trunk, panoramic roof, "Focal" system and other accessories depending on the finish levels.

Safety systems use radars (9), cameras (6) to provide automatic braking (pedestrians and two-wheelers), signage that also includes stop signs, one-way street entry and a detour ban and not just speed, adaptive cruise control with light autonomous capabilities of Overtaking and returning to the lane in the range of 70 to 180 km / h, night vision system, lane departure correction, LED lighting from Matrakis, "dead space" vehicle warning, cross-traffic alerts at the rear and more

. And today, but it's only in the advanced western markets. In China and South America we actually know this series very well, not only do we know this series, but even the name 408, so the 308 sedan configuration is sold there.

But in terms of the European market (and ours) The return of the 400 series testifies more than anything to the changes that the car market is undergoing that invents niches, sub-niches and categories in order to justify as many products as possible and capture the customer in the showroom with a model for every taste and preference.

In Israel, you can prefer it over the 3008 or 508 during the year 2023, according to the importer.
