The prices for rental cars in Germany have risen extremely compared to the previous year - if you follow a few tips, you can still save money.

Wiesbaden – Driving a car is currently a fairly expensive affair: since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, fuel has been extremely expensive, and the tank discount, which was intended as a relief, is hardly noticeable to consumers.

But buying a vehicle is also really expensive, both for new and used cars.

But renting is not really a cheap option at the moment either: According to the Federal Statistical Office, the prices for rental vehicles in Germany have risen extremely.

If you rent a car, you should clarify whether you have to return it with a full tank - otherwise it can be expensive.

Scarce rental cars: price increase by almost 50 percent - so you can still save

In May 2022, the prices for rental cars increased by almost 50 percent (48.7 percent) compared to the same month last year.

A comparison with the average consumer prices shows how significant the price increase is: In the same period, these increased “only” by 7.9 percent, as reported by the Federal Statistical Office.

The reason: During the corona pandemic, many rental car providers had significantly reduced their vehicle fleets.

According to the Federal Association of Car Rental Companies (BAV), demand has meanwhile increased again.

However, the rental companies are currently not getting the number of vehicles actually required from manufacturers and importers.

Scarce rental cars: Compare prices and inquire about extra costs

Nevertheless, you can save money on rental cars if you follow a few tips - this does not only apply to rentals abroad.

So you should of course compare prices in advance - for example with the help of a comparison portal.

You should also ask the landlord about possible extra costs before booking.

Scarce rental cars: return protocol protects against nasty surprises

The ADAC also recommends avoiding unnecessary insurance - it should also be clarified whether the vehicle must be returned with a full tank.

There are providers who charge excessive fees if the car is not returned with a full tank.

Another important tip is to check the vehicle for damage before you set off - this will help you avoid being held liable for previous damage.

The same applies to returning the vehicle: Renters should insist on a return protocol.

To be on the safe side, it's also worth taking a few photos when you return the bike - this way you have evidence if you later charge for alleged damage.
