A study by Aston University in England found that the inside of a car is a lot dirtier than most people realize.
It is clear that the car gets dirty while driving.
For most drivers, a visit to the car wash is therefore a matter of course.
But the cleaning of the car interior is criminally neglected.
Aston University in Birmingham, England, has published a study showing that this is sorely needed.
As part of this study, interior samples were taken from various cars to determine the level of bacterial contamination in the vehicles.
The vehicles were between two and 17 years old.
The results are disgusting.
Trunks and driver's seats in cars are particularly dirty
The researchers found a particularly high concentration of faecal bacteria such as E. coli
in the trunks and also on the driver's seats
.
The gear levers, dashboard and rear seats also showed higher levels of bacterial contamination than the average household toilet.
The researchers also found that vehicles are dirtier the older they are.

Drivers should clean the interior more often and more thoroughly
Aston University senior professor Dr.
Jonathan Cox, explains that the study results should prompt drivers to clean the car interior much more thoroughly.
Since many people transport their purchases and groceries in their cars and trunks, they should therefore take particular care to wash the food well before preparing it and eating it.
The next time you drop a piece of your pretzel on the seat, think twice about eating that one.
After all, they would never think of eating off a toilet seat.
