The essential

  • After 148 days of debate, the verdict of the sprawling trial of November 13 is expected in the evening.

  • The court is to announce the sentences of the 20 defendants, 14 of whom were present during the trial.

  • The reading of the deliberations will not begin "before 6:30 p.m.", indicated a judicial source in the middle of the afternoon.

  • The National Anti-Terrorist Prosecutor's Office has requested life imprisonment with an incompressible security period for Salah Abdeslam, the only survivor of the November 13 commando.

  • The sentences sought against the 20 defendants range from five years' imprisonment to irreducible life imprisonment.

Life also required against nine co-defendants

The Pnat also requested life imprisonment against nine co-defendants of Salah Abdeslam:

  • Mohamed Abrini

, "the man with the hat", who had been filmed at Brussels airport in March 2016, pushing a trolley of explosives.

  • Osama Atar

, presumed "mastermind" of the attacks and presumed dead in Syria.

  • Osama Krayem

    Sofien Ayari

accused of planning an attack at Amsterdam airport on November 13, 2015.

  • Mohamed Bakkali

, the alleged "logistician" of the attacks.

  • The brothers

    Fabien and Jean-Michel Clain

, the presumed "voices" of the claims of the attacks and probably dead in Syria.

  • Omar Darif

, suspected of having participated in the manufacture of the explosive vests.

  • Obeida Aref Dibo

, an ISIS cadre, presumed dead in Syria.

The change of speech of the main defendant

Describing himself as an "Islamic State fighter" at the opening of the proceedings, the last survivor of the commando who sowed death on the night of November 13, 2015 gradually changed his speech during the trial.

The 32-year-old Frenchman repeatedly affirmed at the hearing that he "gave up" on triggering his explosive belt on the evening of the attacks, "out of humanity".

The irreducible perpetuity required against Abdeslam

As a reminder, the Pnat requested life imprisonment with an incompressible security period against Salah Abdeslam.

In a plea aimed at avoiding this "slow death penalty", his defense recalled that the sentence had only been pronounced four times, against men recognized as "psychopaths" and convicted of crimes committed against minors.

The court has been deliberating since Monday

The special assize court presided over by Jean-Louis Périès has been deliberating since Monday noon in an undisclosed location.

Before that and in front of a packed room at the Paris courthouse, she had given the floor for the last time to the 14 defendants present (out of 20).
