The EU Council of Environment Ministers announced overnight that it had reached an agreement on the package of green measures 'Fit for 55' for the climate which, among other things, provides for a 100% reduction in CO2 emissions by 2035 for new cars and vans, therefore the stop to the sale of petrol and diesel cars by that date.
The measure is intended to contribute to the achievement of the continent's climate goals, in particular carbon neutrality by 2050. At the request of countries including Germany and Italy, the EU-27 has also agreed to consider a future green light for the '' use of alternative technologies such as synthetic fuels or plug-in hybrids if capable of achieving the complete elimination of greenhouse gas emissions.
The European Environment Ministers meeting in Luxembourg also approved a five-year extension of the exemption from CO2 obligations granted to so-called 'niche' producers, i.e. those producing fewer than 10,000 vehicles per year, until the end of 2035. The clause, sometimes called the 'Ferrari amendment', will benefit luxury brands in particular.
