An 18-month-old child was the victim of early drowning in a private swimming pool in the town of L'Escale (Alpes-de-Haute-Provence), reports BFM TV on its website.
The baby remained underwater several times before being rescued, the media said.
The child was transported in serious condition to a hospital in Marseille.

She was hospitalized in very serious condition, with her vital prognosis involved.

The child was declared dead overnight from Monday to Tuesday in a hospital in Toulouse.
Between June 1 and September 30, 2021, 1,480 accidental drownings had been recorded in France, of which 27% were followed by death, reported Public Health France.
Most of these drownings take place at sea (47%), then in swimming pools (26%) and in waterways and bodies of water (23%).
Last year, it was among the youngest and oldest that drownings were the most numerous: 22% occurred among those under six years old and 26% among those aged 65 and over.
They were more fatal after 65 years: in this age group, 41% of drownings are followed by death against 6% in children under six years old.
