Can AMG electrify?

With the EQE 53, the Mercedes sports department is sending a Stromer with 687 hp and 1000 Nm of torque onto the road.

A silent kicker with the power of a cannonball.

  • The sports car forge from Mercedes drives into the electric age.

  • In the short term, the two electric motors even mobilize up to 700 hp.

  • Can the digital sound really replace the rumble of the exhaust?

Spoilers and sills - goodbye.

Exhaust pipes as thick as upper arms - hasta la vista, baby!

And there is nothing left on the ears either, the neighbors will be grateful.

AMG, the formerly down-to-earth tuning subsidiary of Mercedes, drives into the future.

First test with the all-electric Mercedes AMG EQE 53 4matic+.

Faster Higher Further!

Ancient Latins know that there is a translation error in the modern Olympian motto: Citius, altius, fortius – reads the original.

Instead of "further" it should actually be "stronger".

Faster and stronger, that has always been the guiding principle in the Swabian town of Affalterbach.

And that at least doesn't change in the electronic age.

Because the EQE is a real muscleman with almost 700 hp.

Does that make sense?

So much performance requires a lot of electricity and, as is well known, it doesn't just come from the socket.

No matter - the clientele wants such cars.

Mercedes builds them.

As colorful as an aquarium: this is how the cockpit lights up

Fans of the three capital letters have to make concessions when it comes to appearance.

The EQE 53 does have a more conspicuous front grille with vertical chrome-plated cross braces and a slightly larger rear spoiler at the rear - but otherwise it is almost identical in construction to the normal Mercedes EQE 350. Both outside and inside - apart from one or the other decorative seam, the Sports seats and the graphics on the screen landscape specially developed for AMG, which are more reminiscent of the cockpit of a fighter jet than of a car.

At night, the EQE shines like a vehicle from another planet.

Colorful like a tropical aquarium.

An AMG car that only runs on electricity - that's the new EQE 53 from the Affalterbach sports car manufacturer.

How does 687 hp and 1000 Nm of torque feel?

The big difference to the normal sedan is the technology.

And then of course the engine, or rather the engines.

Because both the smaller EQE 43 and the EQE 53 are powered by two electric motors on the front and rear axles.

Above all, they were tailored to the frequent calling up of maximum performance.

If you order the AMG Dynamic Plus package for 4,760 euros, you get a boost of 687 hp and 1000 Nm of torque, at least for a short moment.

How does that feel?

So overwhelming that you try it exactly once to let the insane force catapult you from 0 to 100 in 3.3 seconds.

The gentleman driver, on the other hand, remains silent and prefers to enjoy the feeling of having sufficient power at all times.

Even without the boost effect, the reassuring torque of 950 Nm is available,

2.5 tons - the AMG EQE 53 is a massive hum

The chassis of the AMG model has also been upgraded.

The air suspension controls each individual wheel and optimizes the dampers there.

In the Sport and Sport+ driving levels, the EQE is automatically lowered by 15 millimeters.

With Comfort, for aerodynamic reasons, it only starts at 120 km/h. With AMG Ride Control and the standard rear-axle steering, the e-sedan becomes a veritable piece of sports equipment.

The all-wheel-drive AMG dives into the corners quietly and smoothly, and accelerates out again in no time at all, full and satisfied.

It's nice how precisely and quickly the car reacts in every respect.

Even with courageous braking, you have the stately 2.5 tons under control at all times.

If you want, you can still improve here.

The extremely sporty ceramic brake system is available for 4,998 euros.

For the graphics, the designers were inspired by fighter jet cockpits and spaceships.

Artificial spherical sounds for inside and outside

High engine output, strong brakes, lowered chassis - that sounds like the good old AMG world.

The question remains: do you have sounds?

He has, but only synthetically.

Nothing babbles, nothing bubbles and there are no more trumpet blasts from the exhaust pipes.

For personal edification, however, you can let yourself be treated to the so-called AMG Sound Experience.

The artificially generated spherical sounds adapt to the respective driving program and are available in Balanced, Sport and Powerful versions.

For outside and inside.

And then there are the event sounds, a separate sound carpet for locking the car, for example, or for engine stop and start.

Press the Sport+ button and the Mercedes-AMG EQE 53 unpacks the absolute steam hammer with 1000 Nm of torque.

When it comes to loading times, Mercedes has some catching up to do

At 90.60 kWh, the battery in the AMG EQQ 53 is just as large as in all other models in the electric E-Class.

It should enable a range of 459 to 526 kilometers - but of course that depends entirely on your own driving style.

If you let yourself be seduced by the many horsepowers too often, you won't get by with the forecast consumption of 20 to 22 kWh per 100 kilometers.

It can be over after 300 kilometers.

However, if you are not excited on the road, you will actually manage such consumption, as our test drives have shown.

Amazing for such a heavy car.

When it comes to charging, Mercedes generally still has some catching up to do.

With up to 170 kW, the EQE depends on the DC charger, which means a range of 180 kilometers after 15 minutes.

However, a full battery should last more than an hour.

There are five on the 22 kW wallbox.

This is where automobiles with 800-volt technology have clear advantages.

Striking was yesterday.

In the new electric AMG world, the spoiler has also shrunk.

40,000 euros – only the extras cost that much

Higher, faster, more expensive.

Such an AMG also costs a lot of money in the electric world.

It starts at just under 110,000 euros - 40,000 euros more can be created without any problems in the configurator.

But then you don't have it with everything, but the AMG is pretty hot for that.

Also as an electric car.
