Trailer for the movie "Love in the Sky: Maverick" (Cannes Festival, Fremont Studios)

Quentin Tarantino doesn't often refer to contemporary films, because he says it puts him in an uncomfortable position with his peers.

But this weekend he deviated from his custom to fly a new movie - "Love in the Sky: Maverick", the blockbuster sequel to "Love in the Sky" from the 1980s (by the way, the original movie just joined the Netflix catalog).

It should be noted that Tarantino has a personal affinity for this series of films.

The original "Love in the Sky" was directed by Tony Scott, who we are just marking a decade since his death.

Later he also directed "A Novel of Truth", a beautiful romantic thriller whose script was written by Tarantino, so it is clear that he has a warm place in his heart for everything related to his late colleague.

"Love in the Sky: Maverick" was directed by Joseph Kosinski, and it has already brought in 1.3 billion dollars worldwide, making it the biggest blockbuster of the year and the biggest blockbuster since the Corona virus.

Tarantino commented on the film in a podcast of the website ReelBlend.

"I fucking loved it," he said.

"I thought it was fantastic. I saw it in a movie theater, and it provided a real cinematic spectacle, the kind that I thought was no longer seen. It was fantastic."

Along the way, he also praised Steven Spielberg's "Suburban Story" on similar grounds.

"I love Tony Scott's cinema so much, and I think 'Love in the Sky: Maverick' is the closest thing to a new Tony Scott movie we're going to get," Tarantino continued.

"Before the movie came out, I asked Tom Cruise how they could make it without Scott behind the camera. Cruise told me it was really a question, so he refused the project for years, but they found a way. Kosinski did a great job. You can see the respect and love for Tony in everything Prime, in every decision, and in a very vocal way that was also really respectful. This is the closest we'll get to a new Tony Scott movie, and it's fucking great as such a movie."

During the conversation on the podcast, Tarantino had only one reservation - the scene that brings together the hero played by Cruise and his old rival, Iceman, played by Val Kilmer, who suffers from cancer that has affected his ability to speak - something that is also reflected in the character he plays.

"It was almost too cheap, but it works," said Tarantino.

"It's a bit like Charlie Chaplin dying on stage in the last scene of 'Stage Lights' - but it fucking works. You wait for it and the scene delivers."

Now only one question remains - Tarantino, as I remember, lives in Israel, so did he watch the movie with us?

And if so, which cinema was it in?
