Six people died this Friday in a road accident on the RN20 near the town of Savignac-les-Ormeaux, in Ariège, the prefecture of the department confirmed to the Parisian.

Two people are in absolute emergency and are being evacuated by helicopter to the Purpan hospital in Toulouse (Haute-Garonne).

Two other victims are in relative emergency, according to the report communicated by the prefecture.

Many firefighters and emergency vehicles are on site.

Traffic is cut in both directions on this national road which connects Toulouse to Andorra.

The profile of the victims and the causes of the accident are not yet known at this stage.

Contacted, the gendarmerie of Ax-les-Thermes did not wish to communicate elements.

This accident comes as road mortality increased by 8% in July (compared to 2019), according to figures provided by the National Interministerial Observatory for Road Safety (ONISR).

In one month, 354 people died in mainland France, compared to 328 in July 2019, this is the second highest mortality for the month of July over the past ten years.
