A fatal accident occurred in Antibes (Alpes-Maritimes) on the night of Friday to Saturday, around 1:30 am.
A 33-year-old woman, who was riding a scooter on Avenue de Nice, was hit by a car traveling in the opposite direction, reports Nice-Matin.
She died instantly.
The driver was passing another vehicle when he hit the scooter.
Thirteen firefighters were mobilized to the scene of the tragedy, but the victim died before they could initiate a resuscitation attempt.
The person who caused the accident fled.
He was still wanted this Saturday noon, according to local newspapers.
Accidents on the rise
The number of scooter accidents has been on the rise for three years.
According to figures from Road Safety, in 2020, seven people were killed in a total of 870 personal injury accidents while driving an "EDPM", motorized personal transport device in administrative jargon, which brings together the category of electric scooters but also, in a more confidential way, monowheels, Segways and other hoverboards.
In 2021, this figure jumped by almost 30%, to 24 killed.
And the increase in mortality is following a curve as upward as the growing success of these urban mobility devices: already around ten deaths since the start of this year and an increase in the number of injured by 177% cumulatively from August 2021 to July 2022 compared to the year 2019.
