Is YouTube expanding its paywall strategy?
According to a report first published on Reddit and gaining thousands of comments, users will have to pay money to watch videos in 4K quality.
In a screenshot from the application posted by the surfer u/Ihatessmokealarms, it appears that next to the option to watch the video in 2,160p (4K quality) there is a message that the option is only intended for users of the premium service, along with a "Join" button.
This means that soon, if it is indeed a move that will be implemented and will not remain an experiment, the viewing quality for users who do not pay for the premium service - will be limited to 1440p only (2K quality), in supporting videos.
And it seems that the experiment has expanded globally, since following the announcement, additional users from different countries reported on the network a limitation in the viewing quality of the application - both on iOS and Android.
However, the surfer EUChristianDemocrat mentioned that the Chinese video service Bilibili has an identical model.

In Israel, the price of a premium YouTube subscription is NIS 23.90 per month and allows you to watch videos on the platform without advertisements, watch or listen to videos in the background even if you have closed the application on your smartphone, and the option of downloading videos for later viewing without an internet connection.
In addition, subscribers also receive access to the music service YouTube Music at no additional charge.
Meanwhile, technology sites around the world have reached out to YouTube spokespeople for comment, where they have yet to respond.
