Disappearance of two French people in Mexico: two arrests for "homicide"

2022-11-07T08:31:01.930Z

The two men arrested are the "probable responsible" for the murder of Assya Madjour and Michel Amado, two missing Frenchmen

Mexican authorities announced on Sunday the arrest of two men "probably responsible for the homicide in August of a couple of French origin committed in Valladolid in Yucatán (southeast)".

Their arrest comes "53 days after relatives" of the couple "reported their disappearance in mid-September," added the secretariat (ministry) of public security of the state of Yucatán (southeast) in a press release.

The French authorities had confirmed on October 5 the disappearance of two French nationals in Mexico.

No news since September 12

AFP could not confirm Sunday evening with the French Embassy in Mexico City whether the victims are these two missing Frenchmen, Assya Madjour and Michel Amado.

Questioned by France Bleu, Assya's family believes that with these two arrests, "justice has been done", even if "it will not give us back Michel and Assya".

The couple, married in May in Valladolid, was based in this city in the state of Yucatan, where they have been managing two hotels and rooms for tourists for several years.

The 50-year-old Frenchwoman has been in the country for more than two years, when her companion, 57, has lived there for fifteen years.

Since September 12, none of them had given any sign of life to their relatives, living in the Basque Country.

Their fate had been deemed "very worrying" by their families, who feared "a kidnapping".

“It seemed weird to us”

By message, before September 12, Michel Amado would have indicated looking for land in Chiapas, while his wife spoke of a spiritual center.

"It seemed weird to us, it's not their style," Nawel Madjour, sister of the disappeared, told AFP in early October, who also questions the origin of the messages.

"We think they've never been to Chiapas and the problem is in Yucatan," she added.

By "using a cell phone of the couple", the alleged murderers made it appear that the two Frenchmen "were on a trip to the state of Chiapas", also in southern Mexico, but hundreds of kilometers from Yucatan, said the press release from the local Department of Public Security.

106,000 people missing

The two alleged perpetrators, aged 34 and 41, were arrested in central Mexico, respectively in the state of Guanajuato and Querétaro.

Since 1964, 106,000 people have gone missing in Mexico, according to the National Register of Missing Persons.

Some missing persons are foreigners who have been kidnapped for ransom.
