The heavy televisions of the past have become thin, the resolution has improved and so has the sound quality

Young people who find it hard to believe that we once managed without a smartphone and before that there was even no Internet - are equally surprised to hear that today's television is not the television of yesteryear.

The history of television begins somewhere in the 20s of the 20th century, but when it comes to Israel - the story is different.

The country that was founded in 1948 began broadcasting official television broadcasts only in 1966 - and even then these were broadcasts within the framework of educational television.

What is called "Israeli television" (later: "Channel 1" and today "Kan 11") began in 1968, when the first broadcast was the IDF parade on Independence Day.

In the late 1970s, when color televisions began to become common in Israel and to replace the televisions that displayed only a black-and-white image, an amusing event took place in Israel: the government ordered the Broadcasting Authority to prevent the possibility of watching its broadcasts in color, in order to reduce the sale of color television receivers - based on the perception that their sale stands out the gap between rich and poor.

Of course, this did not prevent the Israeli public from insisting on color televisions, since it was possible to receive a number of television stations from neighboring countries (Jordan and Lebanon, for example).

This is how a unique product arrived on the market whose purpose was to restore the color synchronization signals removed from Israeli television broadcasts.

The product, called "anti-erasing", was installed inside the color TV sets that were sold.

Although his operation impaired the quality of the image - he gained great popularity.

This is how the government realized that the method of erasing the color does not achieve its goal, excused itself and allowed color broadcasts on Israeli television.

Watching a football game on a screen as it was not possible before

Of course even color televisions that manage to transmit color broadcasts - with or without "anti-deletion" - are still not similar to the screens we use today.

In those days the device was much "fatter" (the projection methods that allow the use of a thin screen, such as LED, OLED and QLED, were not even close to being invented yet).

Its average screen size was significantly lower than today's.

It was not a rare sight to see a family's living room where there was only a 21-inch TV.

That was the standard.

Imagine major sporting events such as the World Cup, where family and friends gather to watch the games and do so on a screen that is smaller than the computer screen you are sitting in front of today.

And of course the resolution was also far from what we know today.

Not 4K or even HD, but SD - 480p horizontal lines only.

"I remember myself as a child, watching football on such a big old television," recalls Shlomi Baruch, VP of the LG brand at HI Group, the official importer of LG's electronic entertainment products in Israel. "Over the years, the physical shape of the televisions has changed significantly and so is the resolution.

If in the 80s we all watched broadcasts in 480p quality, in the 2000s we already progressed to HD (720p) and even Full HD (1080p. In 2018, a great revolution took place, with the introduction of the 4K resolution (2160p, which was launched in Israel on the occasion of the World Cup broadcasts, which were held that year in Russia.

" "Today," Baruch continues, "you can watch a football match on a screen as it was not possible before: in a smooth, fast and high-quality way. When you watch football today on an advanced screen - you feel as if you are on the field itself. The sound experience has also improved significantly. In the past it was not a significant factor in watching, but today it is an integral part of it, even in sports games.

"Today the Israeli consumer gets more for less money" (Photo: ShutterStock)

- What characterizes the current consumption habits of Israelis?

"Israeli consumers love innovation. They prefer higher quality screens today, certainly compared to previous years. What's more, the prices are more accessible today than they were in the past, thanks in part to the large tax reduction on screens, which was made before the previous World Cup. Before that, on 55-inch screens ' and above there was a high taxation of 30%. When it decreased, they became more accessible. If in 2014 we launched a new OLED screen at LG whose price was tens of thousands of shekels, today it is sold for less than 5,000 shekels.

A 77-inch screen that used to sell for 30,000 and even 40,000 NIS is now sold for less than 10,000, which makes it accessible to larger parts of the population. The Israeli consumer today gets more for less money."

"Another thing that has changed is the number of televisions in the house. If there used to be one television, today it can also have 3 or 4, depending on the number of residents of the house and the rooms in it. This change is particularly relevant for periods such as the next World Cup that is upon us for the better. It saves the family arguments between who who wants to watch the games versus those who are less interested in sports and prefer to watch a series. There's no need to fight anymore: choose a suitable screen for each room and split up watching."

- And what does the future hold?

"It seems that in a few years there will be custom screens, that is, those whose size can be adjusted to the customer's request. I believe that giant screens, those that are over 100 inches, will be more accessible. Their price, which is very high today, will decrease. Also roll-up screens that come down from the ceiling with a click A button will enter the market. And in terms of resolution, it is already possible to obtain several screens with 8K resolution. In the future they will be the standard and the resolution will go further and even reach 16K."
