"Bumble" joins a service designed to give users back control over their private photos • A surfer who fears that their intimate photos will be distributed, will mark them with a digital fingerprint and if the photos are distributed - they will be removed immediately

The dating app "Bumble" is launching today (Thursday) a service designed to give users back control over their intimate photos and also ensure that the photos remain private at all participating technology companies.

Bumble has joined the platform StopNCII.org (short for Stop Non-Consensual Intimate Images), which allows reporting and removal of intimate images removed from the app.

Facebook and Instagram are also partners in the platform.

How does the innovation work?

Surfers subject to threats or extortion through intimate photos and videos ("revenge porn"), or users who fear that their intimate photos will be distributed, can create digital fingerprints from the photo or video.

Those fingerprints (and not the original photo) are shared with the technology companies that are members of StopNCII.org, including TikTok, Facebook, Instagram.

If a photo matching the digital fingerprint has been uploaded, the photo will be sent to the content enforcement system of the participating platform and if it meets the criteria of an intimate photo, it will be removed and blocked from further sharing on all partner platforms.

I mean, did you report an intimate photo that was shared from Bumble to Instagram?

Submit the photo's digital fingerprint and the feature will remove and block it from Instagram and all partner platforms.

"With most of our lives spent online, blackmail through intimate photos is a growing issue and, like other forms of sexual harassment, primarily targets and affects women. We are proud to partner with StopNCII.org to fight against the abuse of intimate photos and ensure that the Internet is A safer space," said Lisa Roman, vice president of public policy at Bumble.
