No Mercedes at the forefront, but two Tesla models - and Chinese brands are strong: last year's crash tests brought some surprises.

The car club is amazed.

The ADAC summed up the past crash test year as “upside down”: “In 2022, Mercedes and Volvo will not share the podium for the safest cars, but two Tesla models and a Lexus.”

Tesla's strategy of evaluating a large amount of real accident data seems to be working.

The established premium manufacturers are not only put under pressure by the switch to electromobility and the attack by new brands, but also by the evidently high learning ability of the competition when it comes to safety.

This is especially true for the newcomers from China, who probably learned from earlier mistakes and got five stars in the last crash test according to Euro NCAP - and now some deservedly appear in the top ten.

However, a stable vehicle is not enough for this.

"Since 2020, Euro NCAP has also been assessing how the vehicle behaves in a crash with another vehicle," explains ADAC: "There are points deducted for hard or stiff structures on the body that protect the occupants at the expense of the other party involved in the accident." Active safety is also becoming increasingly important.

The top rating of five stars is only given if assistance systems help to avoid accidents or at least reduce their severity.

Mercedes is still represented in the list of the best, while BMW, for example, did not make it into the top ten with the 2-series coupe: Above all, the poor performance of its safety assistants when it came to protecting other road users cost percentage points.

Euro NCAP has announced a further tightening of the test criteria for 2023.

The focus should then be on the security assistants.

Because preventing an accident is still the best protection against injury.
