Autonomous driving: Robo-cars can drive up to 130 km/h

Autonomous driving is one of the most interesting technologies.
Robo-cars are already allowed to drive at speeds of up to 130 km/h.
Only the approval by the KBA is missing.
With the turn of the year there are also some innovations in road traffic.
Self-driving cars have been allowed to drive at speeds of up to 130 km/h since January 1st.
So far, the limit was 60 km/h.
The basis for the adjustment is a UN regulation of the World Forum for the Harmonization of Vehicle Regulations of the UN Economic Commission (UNECE).
The regulation not only allows higher speeds for autonomous driving, but also enables cars and light commercial vehicles to change lanes automatically.
However, it only comes into force if the individual countries want to apply it.
As is the case in Germany now.

However, the implementation in national law is more of a formality, because there is currently no car that has the necessary requirements.
So far, speeds of up to 120 km/h have presented developers with major challenges.

In order for the robo-cars to be able to drive fully autonomously at up to 130 km/h, they must have a level 3 system,

There are six levels in total.
In addition, the driver must be able to override the driver assistance system at any time.
The system, in turn, must be able to prompt the driver to take control again - a function that Elon Musk wants to make optional in the future.
In addition, the road must be closed to pedestrians and cyclists and both lanes must be separated from each other.

If these points are met, the driver can even pick up their smartphone while driving without fear of a mobile phone flasher.
So far, however, only Mercedes has offered a Level 3 assistance system for the S-Class and the EQS.
However, it is not yet clear when these will receive approval for Tempo 130 from the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA).

Other manufacturers are also likely to seek such approval in the foreseeable future.
BMW also wants to offer an autonomous driving assistant at level 3 for the 7 Series and i7.
At Tesla, approval of the autopilot or full self-driving could fail due to the lack of sensors.
However, these should be installed again in the future.
