Mazda? Toyota? Hyundai? Which car survives best on Israeli roads? And where there was quite a surprise waiting for us

The Automobile Importers Association promotes a scrapping program, one that will convince you to exchange your old cars for a new one for NIS 11,500.

The main claim they base it on is that old vehicles 9 years old or older are 6 times more likely to get stuck on the road and cause traffic jams.

Based on data from Ayalon routes, they stated that these cars had a part in the traffic jams on the roads.

With the help of the information systems of the "Carzon" car price comparison website, we set out to check which are the cars that best survived the years on the road and specifically the years that the research in question pointed to - cars that hit the road between 2008 and 2014.

And before the full list, two things should be remembered: cars that sold in larger quantities when new are also the ones that are likely to show the larger numbers down the road.

In other words, the position of the Ford Focus in fourth place despite the significant decrease in the reliability of the model starting with the third generation (which reached us during the year 2011) is due to the fact that it initially went on the road with large suppliers.

A more common car will enjoy a greater availability of parts and garages, making it easier for its owner to continue maintaining it as it ages.

The second thing is that this figure is nevertheless an indication of the durability and reliability of these models and this can be seen in places where a relatively small manufacturer like Seat, for example, which was not in the leading group or even in the top ten manufacturers in those years has a representative in the form of the Ibiza.

On the other hand, three other manufacturers such as Renault, Peugeot and Citroën that regularly held places in the second ten left a single model on this list - Renault Fluence.

Japanese army, Korean occupation

So in first place with 59,814 10-15 year old units still driving on the roads no one will be surprised to find out that there is a Toyota Corolla - this car that has made a career out of being synonymous with exceptional reliability and durability proves it here as well.

This of course adds to the fact that it has been sold in very high numbers over the years.

In her case, these yearbooks are about the 10th generation that began to be sold from 2008 (yes, the one with the robotic box) until 2013 and the 11th generation since then.

In second place is Mazda 3, with 57,569 units in motion.

This is also a model that hit the roads in very large quantities.

How big?

In 2008, Mazda as a whole led the domestic market for the 13th year, and the Mazda 3 was the best-selling car.

She remained with this title in 2009, 2010 and 2011.

By the way, in 2009 and 2010 it registered a little more than 21 thousand units per year - a figure that leading manufacturers can only dream of today.

In third place is the Hyundai i30 with 40,382, just like the two cars that preceded it and just like the rest of the list here, the secret is long and successful tenures as fleet cars that hit the roads in large volumes together with mechanical simplicity and basic and durable assemblies.

But Hyundai's story here is twofold.

The i30 was the car sickle that marked the Koreans' first significant foothold in the European market, a move that continues to this day.

And one more thing - out of the 20 models here, Hyundai has 5 representatives among the ultimate survivors.

In fourth place - Ford Focus.

39,460 units that are still on the road, the vast majority of them from the excellent second generation, when from 2011 onwards the third generation landed here on the double-clutch robotic gearbox and the finishing problems, this model pretty much disappeared in the sales charts as well.

In fifth place is another Hyundai model, this time it's the i20 of which 29,525 units are still moving on the roads.

It replaced the Gates in 2008-2009 and registered a huge leap in relation to it, but the gap with the Europeans in terms of quality and refinement is still maintained - but in one area it completely beat them - it is still here on the roads.

In sixth place, another Korean - Kia Picanto.

The mini car arrived here in 2011 to the then (and now) boiling cauldron of small, efficient and cheap mini cars - but it also brought with it the feeling of a large car and a more complete product than competitors such as the Suzuki Alto/Celerio or the Peugeot-Citroen C1 duo and the 107

26,662 units from that first generation are still moving on the roads.

Hyundai Accent and Hyundai i35 (Elantra) are in seventh and eighth places respectively with 24,818 and 22,075 units each and in ninth place is Mazda 2, in those years it was the second generation of Mazda's super mini car, by the way, even today it continues to star in the delivery charts despite its advanced age Of the cars that hit the roads between 2008 and 2014, 21,640 cars are still driving.

The top ten is closed by a very surprising car - the Honda Civic.

The Japanese manufacturer from 2010 was gradually relegated to the second ten of the best-selling brands and today is actually almost completely erased, turns out to be a car that survives the test of time very well - 20,727 units.

About prejudices and clichés

But with all due respect to the cars that have the most of them and the reputation of the Corolla and Mazda 3, the more interesting figure is not how many cars of a certain model are still driving on the road, as mentioned, it is a figure that may mislead and is biased from the starting point - the more units of a certain model that hit the road, the more likely that they will survive over the years.

The real statistic that reveals the reliability of your car is how many cars survived in relation to the number of cars that hit the road - in other words, what is the "survival" percentage of all cars of the same model.

Here the masks are removed and the numerical truth is revealed - if you want a car that has the best chance of surviving the years you should look for the Kia Picanto.

The smallest and most basic of Kia's offerings is the most durable car according to our test.

With 26,662 units remaining on the roads out of 29,009 sold here in the relevant yearbooks, it has a survival figure of 92%.

In second place is the Hyundai i35 with 91% where 22,075 cars out of 24,205 that hit the road are still driving and with the same percentage the Suzuki SX4, but in much lower numbers - 17,067 out of 18,830 units.

What do all three have in common?

Technological simplicity, turbo-free engines and classic automatic gearboxes (planetary).

I wonder what awaits us with the more modern cars.

You can find the rest of the results in the attached table, we will just jump to the juicy part no less than the top of the table - its bottom.

The table doesn't lie, these are the cars that survive the best in Israel (Photo: Walla! System, Keinan Cohen)

There at the bottom of the "stars" is the Chevrolet Cruze, out of 23,368 units, only 12,113 survived, which puts it at a sad 52%.

Renault Fluence with a very weak figure, with 15,972 cars that are 64% of 24,784 still moving on the roads.

In third place from the end is another European - Skoda Octavia - 67% of the cars still have an active license.

Kia Rio surprisingly is also with a relatively low percentage of 74%.

But two Europeans register a fairly good and even surprising figure in relation to reputation - Seat Ibiza, of which 15,865 units out of 20,051 continue to move, shows 79% survival and Ford Focus 80% thanks to 39,460 units out of 49,457 sold.
