The
Renault Twingo
reappeared and was once again on everyone's lips.
And it's not because there is a new version on the market but because
Shakira
mentions it in her new song that she recorded with
Bizarrap
.
"I don't even know what happened to you. You're so weird that I can't even distinguish you. I'm worth two out of 22. You changed a Ferrari for a Twingo
," says a section of the letter.
And although in the song the small Renault car appears as something derogatory, since it has no point of comparison with a sports car like a Ferrari, it should be noted that the Twingo
was a revolutionary model
that changed the way cars are designed.
The Renault Twingo surprised by its color palette.
The way in which the designers of the diamond brand took advantage of the interior space in such a small space set a new direction among European manufacturers for the architecture of future models.
An origin between Twingo and tango
The Twingo was presented for the first time at the
1992 Paris Salon
and appeared with the tremendous challenge of becoming a popular model again, after the phenomenon that the R4 had meant.
But its development began in the 1970s but had several cancellations and postponements, until in the early 1980s the French brand put Patrick LeQuement at the head of its design center, who together with Jean-Pierre Ploué and Yves Dubreil give shape to a new concept.
The Renault Twingo could offer a sunroof that left almost the entire cabin uncovered.
The idea of a minivan that in the 80s appeared in the minivan, was adjusted in a vehicle that was
less than 3.5 meters long
.
The name of the model arises from the combination of three types of dances: Twist, Swing and Tango, seeking to highlight the idea of dynamism that the model proposed.
Its design proposed a rounded figure on the outside, with round headlights like frog eyes.
A
large glass surface
defined the image and it even had versions with a sliding roof that left practically the entire interior uncovered.
Inside, the Renault Twingo was also a revolutionary.
The color palette was key to the dissemination of the model, since there were shades of green, yellow, orange, blue and light blue that were not offered in other models of the time.
The Twingo did not accept half measures in relation to its figure:
you hated it or you loved it
.
But something was clear, it did not go unnoticed, it was really a different car.
But the true magic of the Twingo was inside, also striking, colorful and disruptive from an aesthetic point of view and absolutely avant-garde from the applied engineering to take advantage of the available space.
The Renault Twingo marked an era in the automobile industry.
Four passengers could travel without problem in the passenger compartment, with an available space that was greater than any vehicle of similar size and even greater than that of several larger models.
The rear seat
could be moved back or forward
to gain more legroom for rear passengers or to gain more trunk space.
It arrived in Argentina in mid-1994, imported from France, despite the fact that it was produced in Colombia until 2012. This somewhat limited its expansion in the market, a little due to availability and a little due to price.
Despite this, it was widely accepted in the local market.
Shortly after it appeared, it presented a version called Easy, which had a
robotic gearbox
: the gear steps were made as in a manual box but it was not necessary to press the clutch pedal;
in fact, I didn't.
The Renault Twingo was sold in Argentina from 1994.
In 2007 in Europe the second generation of the Twingo was presented, but it was one more car.
Not even the latest generation, presented in 2014 and with the particularity of bringing traction, achieved the surprise and impact that the first model presented in the 90s had.
