The wolf, who was said to be sightseeing in Berlin-Spandau at the weekend, was apparently actually a wolf-like dog.

This was announced by the Berlin Senate for the Environment.

The SPIEGEL had also previously reported on the alleged wolf sighting.

The supposed wandering wolf had led to calls to the Berlin police.

Several people observed the animal in Berlin-Spandau and informed the police on Saturday evening, the situation center said.

On Sunday morning there were calls again, colleagues also saw the animal and took photos and videos, said a spokesman.

The "Berliner Zeitung" had previously reported.

A spokesman for the Senate Environment Administration is now correcting the information that it was probably a young male wolf from the Döberitzer Heide.

An expert examined other pictures and came to a different conclusion.

In addition, the owner of the dog reported.

Wolf pack near Berlin

A pack of wolves settled west of Berlin in the Döberitzer Heide in 2021.

Initially, two parent animals and four puppies were sighted on the site, in May 2022 the Heinz Sielmannn Foundation assumed there were a total of eight wolves on the site.

In January 2020, young wolf "July" from Saxony, who wore a transmitter, was registered in Berlin-Adlershof.

According to the Berlin environmental administration, she left no trace apart from the transmitter data.

After a short time »July« moved on to Mecklenburg.

In 2021, the German Hunting Association declared that it expected more wolf encounters in large cities in the future.

He justified this with the growing population, among other things, and also referred to the pack in the Döberitzer Heide.

In addition to the hunting association, shepherds are often critical of the spread of predators, as they have to give their herds special protection in the affected areas.

Environmental groups, on the other hand, welcome the reintroduction of the animals.

Wolves were long considered extinct in Germany.
