Mazda presented its large crossover, with a new platform, up to 8 seats and also a plug-in version. We know when he gets here

After years of absence from the multi-seater category in the local market, Mazda is going to make a comeback to this category, but this time forget MPV or Mazda 5 - this time it's going for the luxury.

Meet the Mazda CX-90 crossover in plus size dimensions as the Americans love and was presented today for the first time.

For years, Mazda has wanted to erase its popular association and become the first Japanese luxury brand that does not hide under a made-up name like Lexus or Infiniti.

So it is true that the current Mazda 3 showed an interesting step in the direction in the family category, but when the local best seller of January in the Israeli market is the Mazda 2, could it be that it still has a long way to go to this desired goal?

By and large, the CX-90 replaces the CX-9 in Mazda's offering, which was never imported to Israel regularly, but this time aims much higher to compete with the established premium brands from Europe, Japan and the United States.

Why does the market need another large and luxurious crossover?

Mazda's promise is, as usual, focus on the driver.

Here the promise is based on a new platform, here with permanent dual-wheel drive with a preference for power transmission to the rear wheels, in-line 6-cylinder engines with turbocharging and light electric boost or a plug-in version and a new 8-speed planetary automatic transmission.

By the way, Mazda's gearbox is no longer a planetary gearbox.

But one that sounds very technologically interesting, since Mazda says that it does not use a torque converter.

Hence it seems that she went in the direction of a multi-disc clutch that replaces it to produce a "lock" of the gear.

And one more thing, if we start from the assumption that the small Mazda will not go through the saga of developing a platform and engine for just one car and due to the fact that it uses a longitudinal engine - our bet is that there are passenger cars in the market that will use this platform and with rear-wheel drive.

Unlike some of its competitors, its long hood isn't for beauty, but for a really good reason.

The gasoline version will use Mazda's brand new engine, a 3.3-liter turbocharged 340 hp, Mazda's most powerful serial gasoline engine. What is the performance? Fuel consumption? Mazda does not specify the data at this stage. It does say that the vehicle will use an electric boost Moderate from a 48-volt engine that is between the gasoline engine and the gearbox.

Mazda will also offer the CX-90 in a plug-in version. Here the 2.5-liter engine is connected to an electric drive unit that together create 323 hp.

It uses a 17.8 kWh battery. Mazda doesn't specify the electric range of the plug-in version either, but here's a rule of thumb - when a manufacturer doesn't brag about a certain figure, it's usually not something to brag about.

Aiming to move up the positioning ladder, Mazda equips the CX-90 with a very luxurious looking cabin at least.

Among the equipment specified in the press release, 21-inch rims, 12.3-inch screen, surround cameras, overhead display, separate climate control for the second row, air conditioning ports and USB sockets for the third row.

The safety systems will include, among other things, automatic braking, vehicle warning in a "dead zone" and adaptive cruise control.

Madza also did not follow the contemporary route of replacing all control controls with touch screens and leaves the climate control, audio and menu control also through dials and physical switches.

What is the space in the back, how much space is there in the third row and how much cargo volume is left after using it?

We don't know, since here too, Mazda doesn't publish the figure or even a picture of the third row and the trunk.

But remember the rule of thumb?

It probably applies here too.

In the competitive (and profitable) market Mazda is targeting, it will try to challenge the Cadillac XT6, Lexus RX, Genesis GV80 and others.

When?

Medalek Motors, importer of Mazda to Israel, said that the CX-90 is expected to arrive here in the third quarter of 2023.
