In the JD POWER reliability survey, Lexus and the Koreans Genesis and Kia take the first places. For the first time Tesla also surveyed what the results were

Lexus, Genesis and Kia are the three leading car manufacturers in the reliability rating.

This is according to the annual reliability survey of the American JD POWER organization (and therefore does not include some of the European manufacturers), which is based on questionnaires sent to car owners and according to which the different manufacturers are rated according to the real user experience.

For Lexus, this is the eighth win in the last decade in the survey and research that ranks the cars according to reports of faults in the last 12 months by the original owners of cars at least 3 years old.

The ranking itself is done in the way that the cars are presented in the key of providing breakdowns for 100 vehicles.

That is, the lower the number of breakdowns reported per 100 vehicles, the higher their reliability rating.

And before approaching the ranking itself, two comments about the current survey.

The first is that it clearly shows that malfunctions in the multimedia systems and touch screens in particular made up a significant part of all the complaints among all the manufacturers.

The second point is Tesla's position in the survey results.

This is the first time that the American manufacturer appears in the survey, but is not officially ranked due to the fact that the company still refuses to allow access to owner data in the countries where the survey was conducted.

According to the study's editors, Lexus car owners reported 133 breakdowns per 100 vehicles, and it is in first place.

A significant improvement compared to the 6th place it achieved last year in the survey.

It is followed by another luxury brand of a popular manufacturer - Genesis from Hyundai with 144 breakdowns per 100 vehicles (fourth place last year) and in third place is Kia with 152 breakdowns, for this company it is a drop of two places from first place last year.

But beyond the first three, it's worth dwelling a moment on the fourth and fifth places, where Buick and Chevrolet appear respectively.

As far as the first is concerned, this is already a clear trend after last year's survey it was in second place and in the 2021 survey it was in fifth place.

But Chevy climbed from 12th in the 2021 poll to 10th in last year's and is now fifth.

In the aspect of outstanding models are the Lexus RX and Toyota CHR both with 111 faults per 100 vehicles.

What happens at the bottom of the table is no less interesting than the top.

So the permanent company in this club - Land Rover you will find again this time in the last place with 273 breakdowns per 100 vehicles - that is, more than twice the frequency of the first place.

In the penultimate place is Lincoln, then Audi, Ford and Mercedes.

But apart from Land Rover that didn't give up its place, you can see some changes between the companies we are used to seeing there.

For example, Ram, after years of shuffling, is today already in the middle of the table.

Alfa Romeo, which was also a permanent tenant at the bottom of the list, disappeared from this year's ranking.

Volvo escaped from the bottom of the table to 23rd place, let's hope that this is a continuous process and not a flash.

The biggest improvement - RAM (Photo: Keenan Cohen, Yoel Schwartz)

The most improving manufacturers compared to the previous survey: Ram with an improvement of 77 breakdowns per 100 vehicles, Volvo with an improvement of 41 breakdowns and Nissan with 35 breakdowns less per 100 vehicles.

For the first time this year, Tesla owners also rated their cars, although the situation is not alarming, with a rating of 242 faults per 100 vehicles, the company was supposed to enter the unflattering 28th place.

However, the company is not officially ranked in the survey because Tesla does not allow the survey editors to access the information of the car owners in some countries, an approach that allows the study editors to understand whether in some cases it is indeed a fault or incorrect operation by the customers or just an inconvenience that the customer defines as a fault.

You can see the full list of the ranking below, but we will point out some other notable changes and general insights that are worth dwelling on.

The first is Porsche, which after years in the top ten (second place in 2021 and seventh in 2022) is in 20th place and below the industry average.

The second insight concerns the same industry average, in this year's survey it stands at 186 breakdowns per 100 vehicles, last year the average stood at 192 breakdowns, that is, a slight improvement of 3% compared to last year but a deterioration in the broader view - in 2021 on 121 breakdowns , in 2020 on 134 breakdowns and in 2019 on 136 breakdowns.

In other words, the last two years (referring as mentioned to cars from 2019 and 2020) brought with them an aggravation and deterioration in the general reliability level of the new cars.

If it had been officially ranked, Tesla would have been in 28th place (photo: Walla! system, Udi Etzion)

As we mentioned in the introduction, according to the survey editors, the main insights from the survey are that the information and multimedia systems are the most problematic.

On average, these systems were responsible for 49.9 breakdowns per 100 vehicles, this puts them in first place, with the gap being twice that of the next component that customers complained about - the car's exterior body parts.

Not all malfunctions in these systems are considered to be catastrophic, so all the results of the survey should be taken into account.

For example, voice recognition faults which were the most common are not problematic for the day-to-day operation like connectivity faults to the cell phones or display faults of the screen itself.
