A look at Guy Nativ's "Golda" (press release)
Oscar-winning Israeli director Guy Nativ, who is holding the premiere of his film about Golda Meir, "Golda", at the Berlin Film Festival this evening (Monday), said at a press conference that he hopes the film will spark a new discussion of her character and her legacy.
"As an Israeli, I grew up knowing that Golda is a complex character," Nativ said, according to a report by The Hollywood Reporter, emphasizing how much the Yom Kippur War weighs on her legacy.
"This is Israel's Vietnam War," he explained.
The film, he emphasizes, does not aim to clean up the stains.
"Golda is not a super clean character in this film. She has her mistakes, she was wrong and she took responsibility - which leaders don't do today. She did. And finally, she resigned. I want to spark a discussion in Israel. I can't wait for that."

The star of the film, Helen Mirren ("The Queen"), also addressed this in her words, saying that through the role she developed a deep appreciation and even a kind of love for the former prime minister.
"She was unusually brave, with a total commitment to Israel. In a strange way, it was like playing Elizabeth I, not because she was a queen or anything like that, but because of her commitment to her country and her people," Miren said.
"She was very motherly. She was happiest in the kibbutz, chasing after the chickens, but life took her in a different direction, because of her love for Israel and her devotion to it."

In the spirit of these days, the two were also asked about the fact that a non-Jewish actress was cast in the role of an Israeli - a decision that, since it was published, has sparked a whole discourse on the subject.
However, Nativ dismissed the claim.
"When I met Helen at my house, I felt like I was meeting a family member, like an aunt. I felt like I was meeting someone like a Jew because in my eyes she has all the Jewish things needed to play Golda," he said.
