Mysterious object emitting radio waves is 4,000 light-years away from Earth (Reuters)
Scientists believe they may have found proof of the existence of aliens - after spotting an "impossible" spinning object 4,000 light-years from Earth.
The mysterious device sent back radio signals every 18 minutes and was unlike anything seen before in space, astronomers said, noting that observations showed it releasing a huge burst of energy three times an hour.
Astrophysicist Dr. Natasha Hurley-Walker said she began to sweat when she realized she might have uncovered a possible breakthrough in the search for intelligent life outside of Earth. She said she asked herself "is this the moment we finally find out the truth is out there." Dr. Hurley- Walker, who led the research team from Australia, told News Science and Nature: "I was worried it was aliens."
Her team from Curtin University, the International Center for Radio Astronomy Research (ICRAR), were busy mapping radio waves in the universe when they encountered the mysterious object.
She told The Conversation that she analyzed the data and initially suspected the signals were just interference.
But then an observation made 18 minutes later showed that "the source was again in exactly the same place and it was exactly the same frequency. It's unlike anything astronomers have ever seen," she added, "at this point I broke out in a cold sweat."

But her team "breathed a sigh of relief" after a few hours because the source was detected in a wide range of frequencies "so that the power required to create it can only come from a natural source and not an artificial one - or the handiwork of extraterrestrials".
They now believe it could be a neutron star (a compressed star, made mostly of neutrons resulting from the gravitational collapse of a star where the nuclear fusion chain has ended) or a white dwarf - the name given to the cores of stars that have collapsed, or according to the official definition - a celestial body that is the last stage of the life cycle of a low- or intermediate-mass main sequence star.
As it spins through the universe, the 'scary' object sends out a beam of radiation, and for one minute out of every 20 it is one of the brightest objects in the night sky.
