The test that revealed: car manufacturers skimp on safety in commercial vehicles - voila! vehicle

The European safety organization Euroencap publishes the scores of the advanced safety systems of popular commercial lines, the results are not encouraging

Commercial safety system tests (Euro NCAP)

While in the field of passenger cars we tend to give a higher weight to aspects such as driving comfort, space, performance, quality of materials and also safety, in the world of commercial vehicles the view is much more purposeful.

These cars are often evaluated according to their loading capacity, fuel consumption and maintenance costs, the other aspects are given much less attention, also from the customers and as a result - from the manufacturers.

However, it is important to remember that even if this issue is not at the top of their requirements - in the end these vehicles drive around us on the roads, they are bulky, heavy and less easy to control in emergencies, and the drivers register a higher number of trips per year than private car drivers.

And precisely they receive from the boss a car that is not safe enough.

The European safety organization, Euroencap, which performs crash tests and tests active safety systems for light commercial vehicles as well (starting in 2021), tested 20 commercial vehicles, some of which are twins and share platforms and assemblies to test their advanced safety systems.

The results are far from satisfactory.

The score is weighted by sections such as vehicle detection (30%), pedestrians (10%), cyclists (10%), lane keeping (20%), speed warning (15%) and driver monitoring (15%).

According to the scoring results they received, the vehicles are divided into 5 scoring categories.

When below 20% the vehicle is defined as "not recommended", above 20% bronze, above 40% silver, above 60% gold and instruments with a score above 80% platinum.

As is customary in the commercial worlds, among vehicles there are quite a few "twins" marketed in different markets under different names, but these sometimes receive different grades due to the composition of the safety systems in each of them.
