The travel season is about to start, and many will once again consider bringing home a 4x4.
Land Cruiser, Defender, Bronco or Wrangler are excellent choices, but come with a piece of the bill, not only in the purchase price, but also in the ongoing costs, from fuel consumption to garages and insurance.
That's why this time we focused on five Jeeps that live up to this designation: family recreational vehicles in dual-drive versions and higher-than-average off-road capabilities in the category.
These are not tools that will be successful on every climb in the Negev, but they will work well on paths that are not the tightest, are large enough for family use (sorry, the excellent Suzuki Jimny, you're just too small), and you can buy them for about NIS 50,000.
Not too bulky for the city, and not too old.
If this is your first 4x4, remember that the off-road capability of the vehicle largely determines the driving ability of the driver.
Don't give up on an off-road driving course.
In addition, all the Jeeps in the article will also benefit from installing a heightening kit at a cost of NIS 3,000-5,000, which will add 5 cm to their ground clearance, and give you peace of mind on bumpy roads. It is also carried out by an approved repair workshop.
Also, leave a budget for replacement for off-road tires, most of these tools come from the manufacturer and then continue to drive on tires with sidewalls sensitive to tears, and limited off-road ability. NIS 3,000 will give you better grip beyond the asphalt, and more Security that you won't have to change a tire in the field.
Duster.

Dacia Duster 2015-2016: the bargain
Engines:
1,500 cc turbo diesel 109 hp, or 1,200 cc turbo gasoline, 125 hp
Transmission:
manual only, 6 gears
Drive:
choice between front, dual 50:50 with locked central differential, or mode Automatic that the vehicle chooses how much power to transfer to the rear axle
Safety:
3 out of 5 stars in the European crash test
Ground clearance:
21 cm, approach angle 29 degrees, departure angle 35 degrees
Trunk:
475 liters
Average fuel consumption:
13-14 km per liter in gasoline, 16-17 km per liter in diesel
Price range:
NIS 40-60 thousand
Why yes:
The Duster has been in Israel long enough to prove that the jokes about Dacia belong to the past.
In the dual drive version, it shows very good handling for an urban Jeep thanks to a good power transmission system, and a gear with short gear ratios.
The ride comfort is good, it is spacious enough for a family and the purchase and maintenance costs are low.
The diesel is better off-road thanks to more generous torque, but noisy and less pleasant the rest of the time.
Why not:
manual only in the dual drive version, simple passenger compartment, cheap plastics, economy-oriented human engineering, not very quiet ride.
The bottom line:
excellent value for the price for those who have not forgotten what they do on the road with their left foot.

Trios.
Slow and simple, but bearing the heritage of 4x4 (Photo: Daihatsu)
Daihatsu Trios 2010-2011: we haven't forgotten
Engine:
gasoline, 1,500 cc, 104 hp
Gearbox:
automatic, 4 gears
Drive:
fixed dual, fixed 50:50 split differential lock
Safety:
5 out of 4 stars in the European crash test Interior
space:
20 cm Approach angle 37 degrees, departure angle 38 degrees
Trunk:
380 liters
Average fuel consumption:
9-10 km per liter
Price range:
NIS 30-33 thousand
Why yes:
A successful jeep, it's a shame that its import was stopped at an early stage due to the exit Daihatsu from the European market.
Off-road capability is better than the average for the category thanks to a good approach and departure angle, a rear live axle and the possibility to lock the central differential.
From 2010 it also received important stability control, and off-road traction control.
Spacious relative to its size, including in the trunk, and easy to park.
Why not:
Narrow back seat for three, simple cabin, mediocre performance and lack of air on highways.
The fuel consumption does not stand out for the better either.
The bottom line:
small and therefore easy to park in the city, but can still carry a family relatively far in the countryside.
XV.

Subaru XV 2015-2015: The popular
Engines:
Gasoline, 1,600 cc or 2,000 cc (150 hp)
Transmission:
Few manual 5-speed with long power shift, mostly continuous automatic transmissions
Drive:
Double permanent
Safety:
5 out of 5 stars in the European crash test
Spacious Belly:
22 cm.
Approach angle 20 degrees, departure angle 29 degrees
Trunk:
310 liters
Average fuel consumption:
10-11 km per liter
Price range:
NIS 45-60 thousand
Why yes:
Good off-road ability thanks to an excellent power transmission system, very good ride comfort in all A place, very safe and well built. It is common in the market, being the 4x4 sold in Israel, and there is no problem finding tools in good condition, and also ones that have already received a lifting kit that helps a lot to deal with the long nose in more challenging terrain. Why not
:
High fuel consumption, small trunk in practice.
You can live with the 1,600 cc engine on the road as well as off-road, but the automatic box will heat up faster under effort. The 2,000 cc copes better even with long climbs.
The power transmission in the manual transmission is more adapted to towing loads and less to the terrain, less efficient than that in the Grand Vitara for example.
Because of the way the dual drive works, almost any tear in one tire will require you to replace all four.
The bottom line:
a larger and better Forester, but will require you to drop two or three years to purchase one on the same budget.
XV provides better value for money.

Yeti: not a rally monster, but enjoys an efficient dual drive than average (photo: manufacturer's website)
Skoda Yeti 4x4 (2013-2015): the surprising one
Engine:
turbo-gasoline, 1,800 cc.
Gearbox:
robotic dual-clutch, 6 gears.
Drive:
permanent dual .
Safety:
5 out of 5 stars in the European crash test.
Interior space:
18 cm.
Approach angle 19 degrees, departure angle 32 degrees
Trunk:
405 liters
Average fuel consumption: 10-11 km per liter
Price range:
NIS 37-50 thousand
Why yes:
The newer dual drive version of the Heeti (at the beginning of the import there was a 4x4 diesel version, but these would be very old vehicles today) offers a good ability for the Jeep, thanks to the Volkswagen Haldex system that changes the proportion of power that is transmitted to the rear wheels according to the need, a powerful and flexible engine, And a successful robotic gearbox, here in the 6-speed version which is more reliable and better suited to deal with powerful engines.
The Yeti itself is comfortable and useful, with an air conditioner outlet for the back seat which was quite rare in the market at the time, and a division into three separate seats in the back, which makes it easier to carry baby seats.
Why not:
Duster, Grand Vitara and XV are better off-road.
Convenience of traveling in the country
Bottom line:
a smart and useful Jeep.

Suzuki Grand Vitra 2010-2011: The tough one
Engine:
Gasoline, 2,400 cc, 166 hp
Gearbox:
automatic, 4 gears,
drive power gear: front/double
Safety:
5 out of 4 stars in the European crash test
Ground clearance:
20 cm. Approach angle 29 degrees, angle of departure 36 degrees short, 27 degrees long
Trunk:
400 liters in 5 doors, 184 liters in 3 doors
Average fuel consumption:
7-9 km per liter
Price range:
NIS 45-55 thousand
Why yes:
ability Very good terrain in Jeep concepts thanks to a rare power transmission in the category, which allows you to overcome more difficult climbs, use engine braking on descents and drive slowly where you need to carefully adjust the steering wheel.
Good performance and a good supply of terrain improvements.
Unlike the Jimny, it offers a good margin for the traveling family.
Why not:
high fuel consumption.
The 3 doors which is better in less useful space.
The bottom line:
although less tough than the previous editions, still a real and capable Jeep.
