The Israeli Internet Association revealed this morning (Sunday) the Israeli Internet Index that comprehensively maps the preferences of Israelis and Israelis in media consumption and their habits in using the Internet.

The index summarizes the use of the internet in Israel during the year 2022, based on periodic measurements carried out throughout the year by the Internet Association and a comprehensive survey from the beginning of 2023 carried out by the "Mind Pool" institute.

The report provides an up-to-date and detailed picture of the Israeli Internet in terms of infrastructure and performance, websites, usage habits and consumption of online services such as social networks, apps and streaming.

In the arena of social networks, YouTube, WhatsApp and Facebook maintain their dominant position (over 90% of the Israeli public uses each of them), together with a significant jump in the penetration of Tiktok, which at the beginning of 2023 about half of the Israeli public testified to using it compared to about 30% At the beginning of 2022. Still at the top of the table: Instagram - 70%, Telegram - 54%, and Twitter with 35%.

The list of international websites with the most visits by Israelis (via computer and mobile browsers) includes: Google, YouTube, Facebook, Wikipedia, WhatsApp, Twitter, Instagram, a website with adult-only content and Zoom.

The data revealed for the first time by the Internet Association show that the majority of the Israeli public uses the various Internet streaming services such as Netflix, Spotify, and more.

The same is true for the periphery versus the center and the secular public versus the religious-national public.

60% of Israelis use Netflix, 10% Disney+, 5% Apple TV, 3% Amazon Premium and 1% Discovery Plus.

In music services, Spotify leads with 35%, followed by Apple Music with 8%.

The Internet provider market in Israel is largely controlled by the four major telecommunications groups, where as of the beginning of 2023, the Bezeq-Pelephone group dominates the largest market volume: about 28% of Israeli Internet traffic (landline + cellular), followed by the Partner group with 23%, Cellcom with 19%, Hot group with 14%.

The rest of the Israeli internet traffic is divided between a large number of small internet providers, such as Mirs Xfone, 019 and more.

In the aspect of Internet infrastructure, it was found that at the beginning of 2023, about 35% of households in Israel consume home-wired Internet using fiber optics, and the rest using the outdated DSL technology (27% of households in Israel), and cables (about 21% of households).

Israel ranks low in terms of actual consumption of advanced fixed internet infrastructures, while in most OCED countries the actual consumption of fiber infrastructure in recent years exceeds 40 percent of households.

At the same time, Israel ranks high in terms of the availability of fourth generation mobile internet, with the companies Cellcom, Hot, Partner and Pelephone available over 95% of the time.

The report also examined how the youth are active online - the data shows that 49% of the youth spend more than 4 hours a day in front of the screen, a third of all the youth testified that their screen time even exceeds 6 hours a day. The most consumed content by them is music and movies (70% answered that this is their main activity on the Internet), and the second highest ranked activity in terms of their use is social networks (58%). About six months ago, an Internet address space in Hebrew was born, with the new state suffix ".Israel", and shortly after its opening, about 21,600 domain names were added that are fully registered on the Internet in Hebrew.

(The most requested domain name in Hebrew that Israelis asked to register was Google. Immediately after it the word - Israel. The word money locks the ten most requested words).

At the beginning of 2023, over 283,000 domain names (domains) are registered in the il area.

Yoram HaCohen, CEO of the Israel Internet Association: "The Internet Index published this year for the first time by the Israel Internet Association encompasses the habits of using the various Internet services, the scope of the infrastructure available to the public and their quality.

You can clearly see the rapid growth that has taken place over the past year in the consumption of various video content among Israelis, whether it is in the use of Tiktok or in the consumption of series on Netflix.

In general, the network has become the main source of media and leisure consumption - television, series and music.

The survey also shows that the ever-increasing dependence on the network requires us to "catch up" at a faster pace in everything related to infrastructure - optical fiber and the speed of surfing the net.

The use of the network is increasing at a rapid rate and the state must make sure that the infrastructures meet the "demand" and are even prepared for future developments.
