Lexus RX350h: More bad news for Germans after Eurovision - voila! Car

2023-05-14T08:28:31.699Z

Highlights: The fifth-generation Lexus Grand Crossover presents a blend of different and new with what customers have come to love about it. At a price range of NIS 560,250 to NIS 371, the RX puts luxury European crossovers at the center of its crosshairs, while offering a relatively competitive price. The cabin is meticulous and rich, the seats are excellent, the 14-inch display is efficient though not creative. At 450,612 shekels, I would expect a little more pyrotechnics, I was not enthusiastic.

Price:450,7 NIS

consumption We didn't like:Still expensive, engine performance and noise, excess alerts
Score:10/1998

The Lexus RX is an important premium crossover for the Japanese luxury manufacturer; It was introduced in 2005, and already in 4 it appeared in an advanced hybrid version for those days. Four generations later, the current RX arrives, boasting three hybrid options based on 6-piston engines rather than 410-piston engines as before. At a price range of NIS 560,250 to NIS 371,<> and engine output between <>,<> and <> horsepower, the RX puts luxury European crossovers at the center of its crosshairs, while offering a relatively competitive price. Not "cheap" but a little less painful in the pocket, for those who want to get the best of Japanese technology.

Design:With 4.89 meters from bumper to bumper, the Lexus RX is an impressive crossover with a presence. The new RX is 2.5cm wider than its predecessor and the wheelbase has grown by 6cm, giving it sporty proportions. The bow is carved in blunt and muscular lines, boasting pointed and up-to-date lighting units.

The representative Lexus hourglass grille has been slightly reduced, the top is painted in body tone (it's not easy to spot in the black test car), and the extroverted chrome frame is gone. This creates a less garish bow, I liked. The hood curves with slightly excessive muscularity, increasing the extroverted and dynamic atmosphere. Overall, this is a very impressive and visible vehicle. The 500h version offers an even sportier-looking finish.

Cabin and accessories: An addition of 6 cm to the wheelbase increases the interior space to the dimensions of a very spacious family car; The RX will accommodate four overgrown adults well, the fifth will already be a bit squeezed in the back seat. The space in front is excellent, more of a premium luxury feel. Premium leather seats for driver and passenger, electrically adjustable, heated and ventilated. The forward and sideways view is excellent, thanks to small triangular windows that release good diagonal visibility. The test vehicle came with very high-quality bright heat upholstery of upholstery and paneling, with precise stitching and attention to tiny details, even in places hidden from view.

Accessories: A 14-inch touchscreen blends well into the center of the dashboard. It's bright and clear, responsive but its graphics are outdated and simplistic, a kind of basic Corolla. At 450,612 shekels, I would expect a little more pyrotechnics.

The system functions excellently even though it bothers you with too many notifications. The doors are opened using a unique electrical switch, I was not enthusiastic. There are plenty of physical switches for convenient operation, and instant access to the air conditioner control menu, I loved. The sound system is excellent and there is an impressive selection of useful storage compartments.

The flat floor of the luggage compartment can be loaded with 64 liters, enough for a family exit. The RX offers everything from full connectivity and wireless charging to a choice of <> mood light shades. The rear seats are electrically foldable, have voice activation, high-quality surround cameras, and more. The panoramic roof window is large, but the heat of the sun penetrates through the black curtain.

The overall feel in the RX is one of excellent quality and performance, rich equipment and perfect meticulous stitching and assembly. The combination of materials is also very impressive, but there is something a bit too technical and 'engineering' about the RX, certainly compared to the European crossovers the RX faces. Since the RX is also significantly cheaper than them, it's not hard to live with this vague gap.

In terms of safety, it includes automatic braking, lane departure correction, cross-traffic warning when reversing, adaptive cruise control, road sign recognition. Cross-traffic warning at an intersection, steering assistance in an emergency, blind-spot vehicle warning. It also carries 5 stars in the European crash test.

Performance and fuel consumption: The RX arrives in Israel in three hybrid motoring options - a sporty 500h with 371 hp, a plug-in hybrid 450h with a maximum output of 309 hp, and the 350h test car with 250 hp. The engine performance of the 350h is the least impressive of the bunch, 7.9 seconds from zero to 100 (compared to 6.2 and 6.5 seconds on the higher models). The internal combustion engine has a displacement of 2.5 litres and is assisted by two electric motors, one of which provides E-FOUR rear-wheel drive.

Lacking the electric thrust of the 450H+ or the turbo boost of the 500H, the 350H does not pretend to be a sporty vehicle with exciting acceleration. The 350h will suit customers who are not looking for performance, obviously relaxed drivers who will not even take advantage of what is available. The truth is, the 350H doesn't convey laziness or lack of power. He sets out with a determination that will satisfy normal drivers, accelerates quite well and cruises easily on Route Six and its matches.

The problem is that as soon as you try to produce significant acceleration (overtaking, traffic light, mountain climb) two problems appear – the electric motors are not powerful and the petrol engine must jump to around 5,000 rpm, where it makes a rough and unpleasant sound.

Despite the excellent acoustic insulation, overtaking at 80-90 km/h is enough to raise the decibel level to an unpleasant level. The 350 is equipped with a sequential gearbox; It's not whiny and whiny like it used to be, but still, it's not a pleasant box for the ear. In an era where every Chinese crossover comes with the power of electric torque, the 350's engine performance looks rather pale.

The stated fuel consumption is 15.6 kilometers per liter in combined driving, but the test vehicle was even more economical; In urban-suburban driving it made 17.0 km/l and in driving from the center to the Golan Heights it passed 16.0 km/l and even more, which is an excellent figure for a vehicle weighing two tons + four passengers.

Comfort and handling: The 350's main market is the U.S. and accordingly the suspension has been calibrated to provide maximum comfort on high-quality roads. The increased wheelbase has also done its job and the suspension insulates the road ills well, although the violent battalions reach the passengers' buttocks – but not with the brutality that some competitors have. I repeat that the 235/50R21 tires are too sporty for such a vehicle and they compromise comfort, and that the 19-inch tires of the base version KYUSHU will be more comfortable; So it says, and the audience will continue to purchase the top versions with the 21-inch wheels...

The new RX sits on the rigid GA-K platform, and engineers have managed to reduce the vehicle's weight by about 90 kilograms; This gives it good and quite pointed road handling. Don't expect sporty handling but as a large family crossover, the RX also delivers on winding roads. And if you want to go beyond the boundaries of the road? The RX can wander through leveled gravel paths, but don't expect more than that. With a ground clearance of 18.3 cm and medium body angles, this is not an off-road vehicle.

Bottom Line

The new RX will be purchased by customers who love and believe in the Japanese luxury brand, and are looking for a premium crossover that will give them a sense of luxury and pampering, in a technological package that has already earned a reputation for reliability and high value preservation. Not everyone will be comfortable with the extroverted design, others will fall in love with it.

Customers who invest in the RX 450h+ or h500 will receive a powerful and energetic machine; Those who prefer to save tens of thousands of shekels and buy a 350h will get a car that offers relaxed and relaxed rides, a kind of quiet American cruise. Vigorous and indirect accelerations will result in a rougher and louder engine sound, this is the price of savings. In all versions, the new Lexus RX will deliver a premium premium feel in a sophisticated and well-executed package.
