Too expensive, too few charging options: Why many people don't want to drive an electric car yet

Electric car or combustion engine? Emotions still run high quickly with this question. At the moment, however, the path is actually clearly moving in the direction of e-mobility. Many manufacturers have long since renounced the internal combustion engine, such as Audi. However, some carmakers, such as BMW, are also keeping other options – such as hydrogen – open. But what exactly speaks against buying an e-car? And what in return? On the Reddit platform, this question is discussed extensively.

The question from user Icy_Property_3289 was quite simple: "What do you think of e-cars?" The response was huge – and so was the range of responses. Many who already drive an electric car love the special driving experience. For many who don't have one yet, the answer goes in the following direction: "I would like to have an e-car, but..."

What are the arguments against an electric car? Charging problems and the range

With the combustion engine, it goes to the gas station - then there are usually a few hundred kilometers in it again. If you buy an electric car, it is best to be able to charge at home or find a good charging infrastructure in the vicinity. But there is still room for improvement here. "In my area, the charging infrastructure is not really there yet – an e-car is only worthwhile if you can charge it at home," writes one user. Another says: "I can't charge at home, so it's out of the question for me so far. But as soon as I could do that at home, there would be nothing wrong with it."

Also, the range is simply not yet sufficient for many. "I need a car with which I can drive kilometers on the highway at the appropriate >170 km/h cruising speed without having to charge a quarter to half an hour every few hundred kilometers," writes one user. "For me, nothing beats an X5 as a diesel as a company car." In general, as an e-car buyer, you should ask yourself a few questions before choosing a battery.

What are the arguments against an electric car? The price

A lot of people are apparently willing to buy an electric car – if only they weren't so expensive. Here are some examples:

My Area

  • "I'd like to have one, but in my world only used cars up to 10,000 euros play a role, everything else is financially crazy. So for the time being, I'm "only" left with combustion engines."
  • "I'd like to have an electric car – I'd really like to. But I just don't have the money to buy a correspondingly expensive car – especially if you then have 5-door and more than 150 km range as requirements."
  • "If money wasn't an issue, I would immediately replace my Dacia Lodgy with an electric one. But unfortunately there is neither a meaningful comparable vehicle (cheap, spacious, halfway suitable for long distances), nor do I currently have the money for it. I love my second car, Renault Zoe."

Point of contention: Is an electric car really environmentally friendly?

The environmental friendliness of e-cars is still controversial. This is also evident in the discussion on Reddit. One user, for example, thinks that it is a contradiction that e-cars are so big and heavy – at least if you buy them for environmental reasons. From the point of view of another user, the production of the batteries is simply too harmful to the environment. Another questions the whole product: "Electric cars solve exactly one problem: local emissions are reduced. All other problems such as microplastic production due to tire abrasion, noise pollution, land grabbing, urban sprawl, risk of accidents, etc. remain unchanged."

Electric cars: Why many people don't want to give up their electric vehicle anymore

Among Reddit users who explain why they like to drive an electric car, terms such as climate or environmental protection tend to appear less. Most people like the driving experience above all, as some examples show:

  • "I drive a Tesla Model 3. It's a brilliant car. I am sensitive to noise and driving is much quieter than a conventional combustion engine. The acceleration is awesome."
  • "I'm only going to drive electric. However, not for the reason of climate change, but for simplicity, efficiency, acceleration and one-pedal driving."
  • "I think e-cars are great. It's a lot of fun to drive thanks to the high and fast torque."
  • "I drive a VW ID3. So far, I've never had a situation in which I absolutely wanted a combustion engine back. However, the horrible infotainment system regularly drives me to despair."
  • "I've been driving a Fiat 500e for almost a year and would never want to have a combustion engine again. If you take into account all costs including energy, repairs/wear and tear, taxes, etc., I drive cheaper than with my previous combustion engine. In addition, in my opinion, the driving experience is much more pleasant."
  • "I've been driving an eGolf since 2020. First car with which driving is something like fun for me. No more combustion engines."
  • "I don't want anything else. I've been driving a Tesla Model 7 Performance for 3 months and it's charging every day at work. 60 km one way and for longer journeys it's just a supercharger."
