Burgers, pizza and more: A9 is Germany's unhealthiest motorway

2023-05-29T04:20:51.763Z

Highlights: The A9 motorway has proven to be particularly unhealthy. A total of 35 fast-food restaurants can be found along the 533-kilometre-long highway. Most fast food restaurants are located on the A7 (46), A3 (42) and A1 (36) The title of "most culinary motorway" was won by the A5 by a very narrow margin. Only every 12.6 kilometers there is a gas station or an independent café along the A8.

There are some interesting statistics around the motorway. Hello Fresh has now evaluated how the food is doing. The result: The A9 is particularly unhealthy.

Anyone who often travels longer distances on the highway knows the problem: At some point, the stomach starts to growl and it's time for a break. But the food at the rest stops and rest stops is often anything but cheap or good. Rather, the more than 13,000 kilometers of highway seem to lead only past fast food outlets. But is that really the case? And which highway offers the most opportunities to satisfy hunger?

The meal box start-up Hello Fresh has also asked itself the question and investigated how many fast-food restaurants, petrol stations, cafés and pubs there are along the nine longest and most important national motorways. "We then divided the length in kilometers by the number of food options, creating the notional value of 'food options per kilometer'," the company explains.

Unhealthy A9: A fast food shop every 15 kilometres

The A9 motorway has proven to be particularly unhealthy. A total of 35 fast-food restaurants can be found along the 533-kilometre-long highway. On average, there are 15.2 kilometers between the fast food outlets, which makes the A9 Germany's citizen railway. The furthest you have to drive is on the A4. Just once every 30.7 kilometers there are burgers, pizza and Co. Most fast food restaurants are located on the A7 (46), A3 (42) and A1 (36). However, the three motorways are all significantly longer and therefore there are on average more kilometres between the locations.

The title of "most culinary motorway" was won by the A5 by a very narrow margin. There are 440 food options along the 120-kilometer highway. On average, drivers will find petrol stations, cafés, pubs or fast-food restaurants every 3.7 kilometres. The A2 (3.8 kilometres) and the A3 and A9 (3.9 kilometres each) follow at a close distance.

Not for tired drivers: On the A8 there is only coffee every 12.6 kilometers

In terms of pure resting places, the A5 motorway was one step ahead, with an average of a petrol station, a rest area or a truck stop every 6.2 kilometres. The experts at Hello Fresh counted 25 service stations, 10 truck stops (which are usually cheaper) and 36 gas stations along the 440 kilometers. The A2 (6.3 kilometres) and the A3 (6.9 kilometres) followed closely behind.
