A teenager who played for a French soccer team has been remanded in custody in Germany following a fight after a match, during which a 15-year-old Berliner was seriously injured, German police said Monday.
At a youth tournament, attended by teams from 16 different countries, mostly European, a fight took place in Frankfurt, central Germany, after a match between a French team and a German team.
"A 16-year-old player of a French football team allegedly hit a 15-year-old Berliner in the head and throat," German police said in a statement. The victim of the beatings "collapsed on the ground and had to be sent to intensive care," she adds.
The judge orders his pre-trial detention
"Emergency services immediately dropped the young man off at the nearest hospital, where brain injuries were found that could be fatal," the statement said.
"The 16-year-old was arrested, and the next day presented to a judge who ordered his pre-trial detention," police added. When contacted, the tournament organizers declined to give details of the case, saying they were "deeply upset by the events".
Police are asking witnesses to come forward. They can also upload images and videos of the incident to a portal.
