In the 1990s, an American professor of mechanical engineering set out to demonstrate once and for all the possibility, or not, for Santa Claus, to deliver a gift to all the wise children of the world in one night. In his demonstration, he refused to exclude the existence of flying reindeer, on the grounds that science cannot exclude the existence of a species on the grounds that it is unknown. The whole purpose of his experiment was precisely to remind us that science is above all the art of testing hypotheses, which should never be eliminated in advance... An approach that should inspire us when apprehending another otherwise metaphysical question: are we alone in the universe?
