Hemophilia is one of the few rare diseases that everyone has heard of. In particular, it became infamous at the time of the tainted blood affair. Needing blood products on a regular basis, hemophiliacs paid a heavy price, with nearly 2000,<> people infected with the AIDS virus.
Hemophilia results in the inability of blood to clot properly and causes prolonged or spontaneous bleeding. The cause is a genetic mutation that affects the production of proteins essential for coagulation. As this mutation is carried by the X chromosome, in almost all cases, it is men who are affected. The most common hemophilia, type A, is related to the absence of clotting factor VIII and affects about 7000 people in France.
