Some road signs puzzle motorists. This is also the case with a sign in France on which a diamond can be seen. But what does it mean?

In Germany, there are many traffic signs that cause perplexity among many drivers. For example, the reference to a bicycle road. And there are also signs abroad, the existence of which is astonishing in this country. This also includes the "booze" signs, which in France are installed as additional signs under prohibition signs such as "no stopping", "no traffic" and "no entry at the end of a one-way street". Another road sign in the neighbouring country is causing heads to spin. It shows a white diamond on a blue background.

Diamond sign in France: lane reserved for certain vehicles

Anyone who disregards it faces a fine of 135 euros. The only question is: What is the purpose of the traffic sign? It's not particularly clear-cut. The answer: The new sign indicates that one lane is only intended for certain road users, as the portal Efahrer.com reports.

Which leads to the next question: who is allowed to use the designated lane and who is not? This is clearly regulated. The separate track is shared with:

  • Carpooling, i.e. vehicles with at least two occupants. This also includes motorcycles with sidecars
  • Eco-friendly vehicles with a zero-emission sticker, such as electric cars
  • Taxis (also without passengers)
  • Buses and other public transport

The new traffic sign can already be found in Lyon, Grenoble and Strasbourg. In the future, however, it will be used throughout France. Most of the time, it is the left lane on the highway. This is to avoid currents caused by exits and overtaking manoeuvres. In some cases, however, the trail is only reserved at certain times of the day. This can be recognized by an additional sign with the times of day. Alternatively, the symbol lights up on a sign above the highway, as Check24.de writes.
