Visually, the new Toyota C-HR Hybrid is quite spectacular.

But does he drive like that?

In the test, the Japanese shows what he can and cannot do.

Tired of counting sheep so you can fall asleep?

Then we recommend taking a look at the Toyota models of the last few decades.

With the exception of the Land Cruiser and the odd sports car, there is little that is exciting there.

At some point this also annoyed the boss: “No more boring cars” – that’s what Akio Toyoda officially ordered in 2017.

The call must have been heard internally well in advance.

The first Toyota C-HR came onto the market in 2017.

Boldly drawn, ruggedly built, a real enfant terrible.

The Coupé High-Rider (the abbreviation C-HR) was designed in Europe for Europe.

And lo and behold: Design sells cars.

Since then, 840,000 units have been brought to the people.

That's neat, but of course there's still a lot missing from the best-selling Toyota Corolla (over 50 million).

The success has made Toyota even bolder.

This was followed by Yaris and Yaris Cross, which serves as the basis for the new Lexus LBX.

Then the Japanese's first purely electric car, the bZ4x, and the latest Prius, which also deserves a design award.

The second generation of the C-HR crossover SUV has become even more eccentric.

Especially with the two-tone premiere paintwork in Sulfur Gold and Black (roof and rear).

At the front, the C-HR is reminiscent of the Prius with its U-shaped lights.

The rear is nice and crisp.

And of course the fashionable, continuous light strip should not be missing.

Like the split roof spoilers.

When the trunk lid is open, the taillights stick out like two spikes, it's a wonder that the TÜV didn't take issue with them.

The two-tone Sulfur Gold and Black paintwork adds an extra kick to the C-HR's already eccentric look.

Toyota C-HR or VW T-Roc: Who has more space in the trunk?

The interior isn't that spectacular - except for the fact that the designers spread the cockpit like two wings to create security.

They overdid it a little in the passenger seat.

There is an additional wall on the center console.

Business class feeling with economy tightness.

The space in the rear isn't exactly generous: you sit low, the side windows are high and quite small.

The trunk is a little more spacious: it is 422 liters, which is similar to the comparable Opel Crossland or the VW T-Roc.

Two screens, two worlds: The instrument cluster is harder to use compared to the infotainment display.

No surprises with the fully digital cockpit.

As large as the display landscape is (twice 12.3 inches, approx. 31 cm), the operation of certain vehicle functions in the instrument cluster is unfortunately fiddly.

For example, if you want to turn off the speed warning or use other assistants, I have to navigate confusing submenus.

The infotainment screen, on the other hand, is clearly structured: It's good that you don't have to search for the sound settings, for example, they are on the start bar.

The air conditioning is also operated with its own switch panel.

And buttons are also available for special functions such as the steering wheel heating.

140, 198 or 223 hp - the Toyota C-HR offers these drive variants

The seats are also comfortable.

They offer sufficient comfort and lateral support even on longer journeys.

Although it doesn't actually need it because the Toyota C-HR can hardly fulfill any sporting ambitions.

The bird of paradise reluctantly dives into the curves on four wheels, and fights its way out again just as laboriously and tenaciously.

One or two hybrid engines are also of the lame variety.

Toyota offers three variants here.

The 1.8-liter hybrid with a system output of 140 hp drives the car on the front axle.

The petrol engine, which is tuned for efficiency, tries to find its performance peak at high speed and agonizingly.

You are better served with the more powerful drive package.

So with the 2.0-liter hybrid, which is also available as a front-wheel drive car, but also as an all-wheel drive car.

The electric motor on the front axle is then joined by a rear unit.

The system power then climbs to almost 200 hp.

And of course you can clearly feel this increase in performance on the road.

The even more powerful plug-in hybrid with its 223 hp promises a little more fun.

But actually the C-HR is more of a car for comfortable gliders.

This is ensured by the pleasantly light yet precise steering and the good suspension.

The dampers iron out anything that could be dangerous for the intervertebral discs and spine on the road.

A comfort, almost like in the luxury class.

The Toyota C-HR is available in the basic version from 34,990 euros

According to Toyota estimates, most customers (80 percent) will choose the 2.0-liter hybrid.

A majority will choose the “Team Germany” equipment.

Included: LED light, fully digital cockpit, as well as wireless cell phone charging and a heated windshield.

If you think the prices are too steep, Toyota calculates: The new, more powerful 1.8 Hybrid (+18 hp) costs 38,190 euros with this equipment - that's on par with its predecessor.

Anyone who opts for the “Team Germany” equipment will receive, among other things, LED light.

Otherwise the scissors are big.

The base costs 34,990 euros, the plug-in hybrid costs 43,490 euros.

A lot of money for a short range (62 kilometers) and a small trunk.

Because in the PHEV the space then shrinks by almost 100 to 350 liters.

What does the competition demand?

A VW T-Roc with 150 hp petrol engine costs 34,250 euros, the comparable Hyundai Kona 1.6-liter hybrid (141 hp) starts at 33,200 euros.

Our conclusion about the new Toyota C-HR

Long live the opposite.

The new Toyota C-HR is definitely exciting in terms of design.

You get a spectacular piece of jewelry that is guaranteed to make you stand out.

The performance, however, is unremarkable.

The drive focuses more on efficiency.

Spirited drivers are more likely to be disappointed here and feel like a sheep in wolf's clothing.
