Actress, singer and musical star Chita Rivera, best known for her role in the play "Suburban Story" and the plays "Chicago" and "Kiss of the Spider Woman", passed away at the age of 91. Rivera holds three Tony Awards.
Rivera was born in Washington.
In 1953 she won a role in the movie "Call Me Madam".
After that, she got more roles in Broadway shows such as "Branches and Pieces" and "Can Can".
In 1957, Rivera won the role that led to her breakthrough, the role of Anita, Maria's older sister, in the original stage version of The Suburban Story.
A year later she starred in the international premiere of "Suburban Story" in London's West End.
In 1984 Rivera won her first Tony for her lead role in the play "The Rink".
In 1993, Rivera won another Tony Award for her role in Kiss of the Spider Woman.
In 2009 Barack Obama awarded her the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
In 2018 she won a special Tony Award for her life achievements.
