Cattle bathing in slurry or a cow corpse devoured by a dog... The images broadcast by L214 are edifying.

The Saint-Malo public prosecutor's office announced on Tuesday that it had opened an investigation after a complaint from the animal rights association denouncing "abandonment" and "mistreatment" in a farm of around fifty dairy cows in Meillac (Ille-France). and-Vilaine).

The public prosecutor of Saint-Malo, Fabrice Trémel, indicated “having prescribed the opening of an investigation on the basis of the facts denounced by the L214 association and noted in a report from the departmental protection directorate of the populations of Ille-et-Vilaine (DDPP 35), co-seizure with the gendarmerie.

“The cattle were underfed, abandoned in a mixture of mud and straw,” said Virshna Héng, deputy director of DDPP 35. With the help of several trucks and law enforcement, a veterinary team handed over the cattle to the Œuvre d'assistance aux bêtes d'abattoirs (OABA), an animal welfare association in Brittany.

“The breeder was no longer able to take care of it.

He was completely overwhelmed by his exploitation,” added Heng.

This 34-year-old man had been followed for “a few years” by the DDPP, and had received several letters of formal notice.

According to the deputy director of the DDPP, the breeder combined his work “with different jobs on other farms”.

The OABA indicated that it had been alerted a week earlier by L214, who had gone to the scene.

In images broadcast on Tuesday by L214, we can see cattle bathed in “slurry”, sometimes up to their chests, as well as a cow corpse eaten by a dog.

The animals are “watered with stale water”, and one of them, very thin, is “locked in a trailer, without water”, according to the association which campaigns for an end to the consumption of meat.

The cattle were transported outside Ille-et-Vilaine during the day to be cared for by a care center, according to Frédéric Freund, director of OABA.

Of the fifty animals, 29 were “stuck in pens, filled with a mixture of sludge, urine and excrement”, he described;

“We will rehydrate them, feed them, and take blood tests to determine if their health status is still valid,” Freund continued.

The future of the animals will depend on this health status, which will be sold, given to an association, or sent to the slaughterhouse.
