A traffic offense soon to be introduced?
The National Assembly voted for the creation of a “road homicide”.
Its creation had been promised by Élisabeth Borne, then Prime Minister, in July 2023, following several accidents that stirred public opinion, including that which involved the comedian Pierre Palmade, in February 2023.
“It is a great victory for the families of the victims, for the associations which fight against road violence, but also for all French people,” said Éric Pauget, co-rapporteur of the text.
“This new qualification will make it possible to put “words to the problems”, but it will also allow magistrates to better judge
those who, voluntarily drunk or drugged, took a life on the road,” adds the elected official.
Beware of the phone while driving...
The penalties incurred would, however, remain unchanged, potentially reaching ten years in the event of road homicide.
But the text plans to broaden the range of aggravating circumstances by adding the use of the telephone while driving, failure to assist a person in danger or the consumption of psychoactive substances.
