According to an ADAC study, many road users are dissatisfied with city traffic.

Especially in Duisburg and Cologne.

But: what are the reasons?

Good for those who have a garage: Looking for a parking space is certainly one of the most annoying things for drivers, especially in big cities.

But there is much more that is criticized about the traffic situation in large cities.

The

ADAC

conducted more than 9,000 interviews with those affected in 15 major cities: residents, commuters and visitors – drivers, public transport users, cyclists and pedestrians.

The result was that many people are dissatisfied with city traffic.

Dissatisfied with city traffic: Parking fees and e-scooter drivers annoy drivers the most

The result of the

ADAC

“Mobile in the City” monitor is quite clear: compared to the last study in 2017, satisfaction has fallen significantly in almost all cities for all four types of transport (car, public transport, bicycle, pedestrian).

Drivers are particularly upset about parking fees in city centers.

Likewise, many drivers surveyed find the “behavior of e-scooter drivers” a thorn in the side.

“Construction site management” and the “parking space available in the city center” are similarly criticized.

But the behavior of cyclists and delays in traffic also annoy many car owners.

Public transport users primarily criticize the lack of availability of parking spaces at train stations and stops, insufficient information in the event of disruptions and the price-performance ratio.

For cyclists (indicators will soon be allowed for bicycles too), the behavior of e-scooter drivers and cyclists as well as cycling traffic routing at intersections are among the most problematic issues.

Pedestrians, on the other hand, are primarily annoyed by the behavior of e-scooter drivers and cyclists.

According to an ADAC survey, there is great dissatisfaction with city traffic in Germany.

According to ADAC, there are several reasons for the dissatisfaction - the pandemic also plays a role

From the automobile club's perspective, there are several reasons for the decreased satisfaction with the mobility situation.

“The increase in the number of cars in large cities certainly plays a major role, but so does increased commuter traffic and increased competition for space,” explains

ADAC

transport president Gerhard Hillebrand.

“In addition, the restrictions on mobility during the pandemic meant that streets were mostly free of traffic jams and buses and trains were empty.

The return to normality is therefore perceived as a deterioration.

Last but not least, given the multitude of crises, people’s overall satisfaction with their living conditions is decreasing.”

In which cities there is the greatest satisfaction when it comes to traffic

According to the study, the greatest satisfaction with the traffic situation is in the cities of Dresden, Leipzig and Munich - Duisburg, Cologne and Stuttgart were at the bottom of the survey.

In order to improve the situation, the

ADAC

has made some suggestions to the cities.

Among other things:

  • Municipalities should operate “efficient parking space management” to ensure accessibility for residents, commuters and visitors

  • Main roads with a speed limit of 50 km/h should be maintained because traffic is concentrated there and avoids diversion into residential areas

  • The cycling network should be improved and the public transport service should become more reliable

  • E-scooters should be regulated more strictly in cities - for example by limiting the number and only allowing parking at designated stations
